The Sibu Malay conman and his early ‘successes’

by Sebanaku Sarawak

KUCHING: There is a saying that don’t help a snake because it will bite the hand that has helped it.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending how it is being seen, it is applicable to the legendary Sibu Malay conman.

Before he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Dato Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg or Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, he was merely an errand boy for the late Datuk Nor Tahir who was closely associated with the former Chief Minister Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub.

He was entrusted by the late Datuk Nor Tahir, who was named by Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub as ‘the-Chief-Minister-to-be’ to replace Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud when the 1987 leadership crisis engulfed the state politics, to look after his property.

The late Datuk Nor Tahir secured projects and passed to the legendary Sibu conman to manage on his behalf.

This arrangement had going on for few years until the day when Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub and his group tried to wrest the chief ministership from Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

At that time, the politics was tense in the state as Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub claimed to have 28 elected assemblymen out of 48 who had purportedly passed their resolution of votes of no confidence on Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on March 10th 1987 in a meeting held in the Ming Court Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’akub subsequently had called for Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down as the Chief Minister but it was ignored by Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The State Legislative Assembly (DUN) was later dissolved by Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to pave way for a snap election on June 15, 1987 by which BN won 28 seats, Persatuan Rakyat Malaysia Sarawak (PERMAS) 5 seats and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) 15 seats.

During this tense period, the Sibu Malay conman was watching closely on the progress of the political episode that unfolded in front of him.

This was during this period that the Sibu Malay conman had decided to gamble his future by breaking away from his boss the late Datuk Nor Tahir.

From his observation, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had better chances to win the political struggles.

And true enough, he had made the right decision to quietly slip into the Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud camp.

The late Datuk Nor Tahir was incensed with the legendary Sibu Malay conman’s act of disloyalty to him.

Hence, it was natural that the late Datuk Nor Tahir demanded the legendary Sibu Malay conman to return all his properties to him because the latter was merely his business proxy – not his business partner.

However, instead of honouring his earlier pledge to merely be a keeper or trustee of the late Datuk Nor Tahir’s business properties, the legendary Sibu Malay conman decided to turn his back on his former master.

He argued with the late Datuk Nor Tahir that since he was no longer on the same ship with the late Datuk Nor Tahir, he would not return the business properties to the late Datuk Nor Tahir despite of fact that the business properties were not his in the first place.

The late Datuk Nor Tahir was extremely in dismay but there was nothing he could do it because he didn’t have any agreement with the Sibu Malay conman.

He thought that the Sibu Malay conman was a type of a man who could be trusted regardless of what would happen to him.

Apparently the late Datuk Nor Tahir had made a miserably wrong choice in giving his trust to the legendary Sibu Malay conman who only cared about himself, and no one else.

Few years later, the legendary Sibu Malay conman, however, had to ‘return’ the business property which he owed the late Datuk Nor Tahir.

It was not because of he had repented for keeping the ill-gotten wealth. Or it was not also because he was being pressured by his colleagues who knew about him immorally kept the late Datuk Nor Tahir's properties.

The reason for him to return the money was because a son of the Datuk Nor Tahir had came to his house demanding him to return his father's money.
And when he made the demand, he had a rifle with him.
At that time, the late Datuk Nor Tahir had passed away.

So, he ‘returned’ the properties to the late Datuk Nor Tahir’s offsprings because he was scared of his own safety.

However, since a conman is always a conman (no matter what), he decided to keep some for himself without consulting the late Datuk Nor Tahir’s children.

Unfortunately, may God punish him severely for his wickedness and greediness, instead of taking only a small portion from the business properties, he took a lion share of it.

At that time, the estimated value of the late Datuk Nor Tahir’s business properties in the hand of the legendary Sibu Malay conman was RM9 million.

He, however, only gave RM2 million to RM3 million to the late Datuk Nor Tahir’s children and told them that he had given them all.

  2. Well in the first place, the properties were obtained through corrupt means so nothing much to complain about. This is the practice by most politicians who feared being caught amassing ill gotten wealth by using friendly parties to hide their wealth. The same applies to Tun Rahman who used chinese man to hide his properties.

Salam to Sibu people, "CAPITALISM" This is what it's all about. Being a businessman Datuk Hj. Bustari has played his game well but as a muslim businessman, he has to answer to ALLAH swt in the afterworld. So do we!

  13. You may seem to assume that Datuk Bastari is a con-man and capitalist but he is close to Najib. There is a nexus that he has been earmarked to take over Bemee's place in the forth coming general election. What say you?
