Nansian says Taib and PM doesn't support BN SPDP and will choose Tiki Lafe

Nansian chides SPDP, sure BN chairman favours his group

Borneo Post March 26, 2012, Monday
BAU: Partyless Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie apparently believes that Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman cum Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will elbow his former party Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and favour his group in the issue of candidacy.
This was what he seemed to mean when he said: “It is up to BN to pick the candidate to contest in Mas Gading (parliamentary seat) even though it is traditionally a SPDP seat.”
He also appeared to be challenging his former party to name their pick early.
He pointed out point blank that since the sacking of Mas Gading incumbent Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe from the party, all the party did was make an announcement that it would pick either one of the five new faces it had been bandying about to defend Mas Gading.
That, he said, showed that SPDP was very much confused about who to choose unlike his group (called the G5 by the media) which was very certain in picking partyless Dr Tiki to defend the seat for the ruling coalition.
“They (SPDP) are very confused now. But for us, there is no confusion as we only have one candidate which is Dr Tiki. BN cannot afford to lose this seat and must come up with a winnable candidate for that seat.
“Dr Tiki has the support of the grassroots and he will continue fighting for the seat,” Nansian told the press yesterday.
He was met after the launching of phase two of the Christian cemetery at Nirvana Memorial Park here.
He added: “Anybody can be nominated by anyone for that seat but it is up to BN to have the final say on who should be contesting.”
When asked about Dr Tiki’s apparent ‘willingness’ to reconcile with the party as long as SPDP met his conditions, Nansian said Dr Tiki was only joking about the matter.
“He (Dr Tiki) is only joking,” Nansian insisted.
He alleged that SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom never keeps his words and any hope of reconciliation would be futile.
“It is not about us standing firm on reconciliation but it is just that Mawan can not keep his words,” he claimed.
During the opening ceremony of SPDP’s triennial general assembly in Bintulu on March 18, state BN chairman cum Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud seemed to clear the air over the Mas Gading candidacy issue by stating that SPDP had the right to pick the candidate and Najib would endorse it.
SPDP is still in the midst of assessing the new faces in the form of Salcra deputy general manager Anthony Nogeh, ZECON general manager Rayan Narong, prominent businessman Henry Harry Jinep and his elder brother, Sarawak Rivers Board controller William Jinep.
The party is also considering Dayak Bidayuh National Association president Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, who is also permanent secretary to the Tourism Ministry.
The party chose not to pick Dr Tiki simply because he had been booted out for insubordination as well as for colluding with Nansian and three other office bearers to undermine party solidarity.
SPDP has also maintained that BN is a coalition of political parties.

Taib says SPDP will choose BN Mas Gading candidate, SPDP 5 becomes SPDP 4

Taib clears the air

After months of uncertainty, it is now confirmed SPDP gets to decide who stands in Mas Gading
BINTULU: A huge sigh of relief resonated throughout Bintulu Civic Centre yesterday when Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud uttered what SPDP members had yearned to hear for a long time – SPDP gets to nominate the candidate for Mas Gading!
Mas Gading has hogged the limelight ever since its MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe was shown the exit by the party recently for gross insubordination. But after his sacking together with four other elected representatives, Dr Tiki continued to trumpet on numerous occasions that he was still very much a BN man and would defend the seat, with or without SPDP.
Dr Tiki’s stand unnerved the SPDP party leadership somewhat because no top BN leadership had cleared the uncertainty even though Mas Gading is traditionally given to SPDP.
The chief minister, who is also state BN chairman, said BN would let SPDP nominate the candidate, while  Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as national BN chief will endorse it.
“Well, what I want to do is to let the prime minister have the privilege of analysing who is the most winnable candidate for Mas Gading,” Taib told the media after opening SPDP’s triennial general assembly (TGA) here yesterday.
The five potential candidates identified by the party to defend the predominantly-Bidayuh seat for the BN are Rayan Narong, Anthony Nogeh, Datu Ik Pahon, and brothers William Jinep and Henry Harry Jinep.
Earlier in his speech, Taib gave an assurance that the state BN under his leadership would not interfere in SPDP’s internal problems.
He pointed out that SPDP, like all other BN parties, also had its own internal problems, but it must be patient in dealing with it.
“We will not interfere in SPDP’s internal struggles. I hope it can sink the differences so that voters will vote for the BN, and for the party to win in its four parliamentary seats.”
Taib said he was happy that SPDP was in the same wavelength as PBB in getting ready for the 13th general election to ensure that the state BN delivered at least two-thirds of the 31 seats allocated for Sarawak.
He added that the winning margin was rather conservative as he had much higher hopes than that.
“I have a much higher hope than just the two-third, but I have not really analysed the whole thing yet.”
On PBB, of which Taib is the president, he said he would leave it to the prime minster to decide on the candidates, saying: “If it’s the state election, then I will decide”.
Meanwhile, Taib also gave an assurance that PBB would assist its three other component parties in the general election which is expected to be called soon even though the term of the current Parliament ends only on April 24 next year.
“We will be hard on our heels to help the other component parties in every constituency.”
Traditionally, PBB is allocated 14 seats, SUPP (seven), PRS (six) and SPDP (four).

New pay scheme: Done in haste, purely a waste
YOURSAY 'If this cancelled scheme is any indication, I shudder about the other decisions affecting the country as a whole.'
PM: New civil service pay scheme scrapped

your sayKsn: What PM Najib Razak did is right, provided that politics was not part of the decision. What I am more concerned about here is the decision-making process of the government.

If this cancelled scheme is any indication, I shudder about the other decisions affecting the country as a whole.

How come the scheme was adopted in the first place? Wasn't the cabinet briefed? Who is the minister in charge of the civil services? How come the chief secretary, the Public Services Department (PSD) boss, didn't brief the PM and the cabinet?

Did not the PM and the entire cabinet notice the almost criminal, shameful disparities between the lower rungs and the heads of departments? Why was the civil service union Cuepacs not consulted in the first place?

A number of resignations, if not dismissals, of those responsible for the cancelled scheme is called for. I hope Najib is working on it.

Sarawakian_3ff9: The private sector will never have a scheme that increases senior staff pay in percentage points more than the lower rung.

Because of the existing large gap between senior and junior government staff, it should be the junior who gets to have bigger pay increase in percentage points than the senior staff.

In this case, the lowest should get the 13 percent and top rung the 7 percent. That's how the income gap can be resolved, not setting up minimum pay arbitrarily.

As usual, the government messed up on this one. No wonder the union was up in arms.

Onyourtoes: Basically, you have nincompoop ministers and nincompoop government servants, all not deserving of getting anything. I guess no ministers or top civil servants responsible have read the documents and studied the scheme being proposed.

You see, with this new announcement, off hand, I could see another anomaly being created. You have grade 54 getting a 13 percent increment compared with those in superscale grade C, which was given only a 9 percent increase.

But do they know that at the moment the salary of grade 54 is almost the same as those in superscale grade C. So with higher increment for grade 54, the salary of those in grade 54 may end up higher than those in superscale C.

Clever voter: Increasing salary without addressing the issue of productivity is a recipe for disaster. There are implications on benefits, too.

Trying to raise top civil servants' pay is right in principle, but we need to consider the person's job match.

Not everyone deserves the hike, just look at the number of blunders that have taken place in ministries, from education to foreign affairs. It's really a joke.

Pemerhati: We already have a bloated civil service of 1.4 million. Compared to comparatively well-run countries like Korea and Taiwan, Malaysia's civil service to population ratio is more than twice as large.

The astronomical monthly salaries of RM80,000 or so that were quietly approved for the premier grades under the SBPA (new civil servant remuneration scheme) outraged the very large majority of the civil servants, who by comparison were only given very slight increases.

Then Cuepacs on their behalf too asked for large increases. If they were to be approved the country would have been in serious financial trouble. So Najib has opted to giving slight increases to everyone.

The smart way to increase the salaries of the civil servants would be to reduce their numbers and then increase their salaries in proportion to the numbers reduced so that the total wage bill remains about the same.

Thus if the size of the civil service is reduced by half, then their salaries could be doubled without causing financial problems to the country.
Pants on Fire: Is the PM scrapping the new pay scheme because the chief secretary (KSN) got a hike of about RM8,000 or more?

Also included were the Jusa (super salary scale) officials who got a big hike of thousands of ringgit. Malaysia Boleh, bro.

Gopallan: Well done, Mr PM. It is good you were able to see through the deceit by those who were originally in charge of the pay review.

Now that you have rectified the anomalies, would it not be prudent to identify the perpetrators who were responsible in nearly getting away with their nefarious schemes in giving themselves a huge pay rise and bringing them to book?

Let these people not get away. They will be up to no good the next time. The least the government can do is to censure everyone of them.
SBPA: Cuepacs urges review on senior civil servants
The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) hopes that the government will give attention to senior civil servants in the implementation of Grade 17 under the New Public Service Remuneration Scheme (SBPA).

Taib kata tindakan Entri dan Nansian salah

Chief Minister: Forming new party not a good idea; too many hurdles

Borneo Post March 10, 2012, Saturday
KUCHING: Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday shot down the idea of a new party to accommodate the five elected representatives who were sacked from SPDP recently for gross insubordination.
“I don’t think that (formation of a new party) is a good idea because there will be many hurdles for them to overcome.
“They have to get the consensus of all Barisan Nasional (BN) parties to enable them to be accepted as a member of BN … so it is quite a big hurdle.
“So, better not take that route,” said Taib, who is state BN chairman.
The chief minister was asked to comment on rumours about the proposed new party after handing over the Chief Minister’s Cup at Wisma Bapa Malaysia.
It was reported on Wednesday that the party, to be called Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras), would be registered before the 13th general election.
The new party, which had already submitted its application to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) for registration, was said to be meant for the sacked five: assemblymen Datuk Sylvester Entri (Marudi), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu) Paulus Palu Gumbang (Batu Danau), Datuk Peter Nansian (Tasik Biru) and Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe.
On Thursday, state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi described talk about the new party as ‘mere speculation’.
“As of now, there would be no more new party although the state BN would always monitor political developments not only in the state but also the whole of Malaysia,” Dr Rundi was quoted as saying.

Economic Pact or political pact?

DCCI signs economic pact with Pekema Sarawak

Posted on March 10, 2012, Saturday
KUCHING: The historic signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Malay Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (Pekema) Sarawak and Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) could pave the way for the state’s Bumiputera communities to become main economic players.
Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who witnessed the signing yesterday, said such cooperation could lead to many business opportunities locally and beyond.
“I feel it is timely and appropriate for DCCI and Pekema to work together. With this, I am sure we (the Bumiputera) can position ourselves as a business community that is modern. Due to our abundant natural resources and strategic location in the Asian economic map, I am sure the Bumiputera business community can grow and become main players in the region, and eventually on the global stage.”
He pointed out that the ‘Bejalai’ spirit of the Iban community, which has seen many of them move to Johor, and the fact that many Sarawakians are involved in the oil and gas industries abroad, showed that Sarawakians are an adventurous lot.
But for them to be more successful in business, the state’s Bumiputera communities need to have a stronger platform to act. One such platform is via greater cooperation among themselves and with others.
On Pekema and DCCI, he envisioned the two entities working together in the field of land development and eco-tourism.
“In DCCI, they have a precious asset, which is land. To develop the land, they need capital and this where the ‘automobile towkays’ from Pekema can come in. Identify the right commodities, such as oil palm and rubber, to venture into.
“Another area of cooperation is in the field of eco-tourism. I was in Bakun recently, and I was excited by its many (untapped) potential, including the 20 man-made islands on the lake,” said Abang Johari, who is also tourism minister.
Meanwhile, both DCCI president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Leo Moggie and Pekema Sarawak president Datuk Abang Khalid Marzuki expressed hope that their cooperation could bring the state’s Bumiputera communities forward in the business arena.
Moggie said DCCI did not hesitate to agree to the MoU when it was proposed by DCCI deputy president Dato Sri Celestine Ujang at a recent supreme council meeting.
“We perceive it as a way to move ahead in the modern world of commerce and industry,” he said, stressing that not many from the Dayak community have ventured into business and succeeded because it was still unchartered territory for many of them.
Abang Khalid said both entities would work together in holding workshops and forums to increase Bumiputera participation in business and improve the performance of Bumiputera-owned companies.
Also present at the event were DCCI advisor Tan Sri Leonard Linggi Jugah and Pekema Sarawak deputy president Ismail Saufi.

Rohani denies announcing she will step down

KUCHING: Member of Parliament for Batang Lupar Datuk Hajah Rohani Abdul Karim denied ever making an announcement that she will step down from politics.

“I have been on the ground to serve the people in my constituency since day one after the last general election and has not stopped until now,” she said when met by the press after officiating at the Ninth Anniversary of Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia at a hotel here yesterday.

“I have never made such an announcement but am wondering why someone is announcing to the public that he/she will replace me as I am sick and unable to serve my constituents,” she said, adding that the announcement can confuse to the people especially the constituents.

“The list of candidates for the respective constituencies in the state is decided by the BN leadership and no one can dispute it,” she said.

Rohani who is also Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism said everyone has to accept whatever the decision not matter how hard it is.

When asked by the press whether she still wants to be nominated for the coming general election, Rohani said that many incumbents are hoping and praying that they will be re-nominated because the ‘fighting’ for the people will never end.

There are also rumours that Rohani may contest in her former constituency of Santubong which is now under the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Datuk Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

“It is up to the highest leadership to decide on the matter.I will follow whatever the ‘bosses’ said,” she said regarding the matter.

In the last general election, Rohani had swapped her seat with Junaidi who was then the MP for Batang Lupar.

The swapping however did not do any damage as both seats were won by the Barisan Nastional (BN).

Wooing Chinese voters

PUTRAJAYA: Winning back Chinese voters is BN’s biggest challenge in the coming general election
The biggest challenge facing Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state in the coming general election is winning back the Chinese voters.
Datuk Ahmad Maslan, the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and BN information chief, told The Borneo Post at his office here on Monday that this situation was the same in all other states.
As such, the urban Chinese majority seats would be the ones most vulnerable to the opposition’s challenge.
He added that the federal government might not have engaged the Chinese enough in the past but it was now rectifying the situation by listening to them more.
Although he acknowledged that it would not be an easy task, Ahmad said BN was optimistic that it would win back some of the Chinese voters and hopefully wrest some of the seats from the opposition.
“We believe the Chinese are rational people and they want peace and progress as much as anyone. If we can assure them that their needs too would be looked into, I am sure many of them would vote for BN.”
However, he stressed that BN was not taking the rural seats in the state for granted and the BN government had been working hard in bringing development to these areas and going to the ground to listen to their problems.
The federal government had been trying its best to deliver the promises of projects made to the rural areas and Najib himself had gone to places like Lachau to find out about their problems.
To ensure that the projects promised were delivered, the federal government had set up the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) to monitor their progress, he added.
Despite all these efforts Ahmad said BN was aware that there were also some rural seats in the state where BN would face tough challenges in the election.
When pressed to name the seats, Ahmad mentioned the coastal seats of Batang Lupar and Batang Sadong where PAS seemed to have made some inroads among the Malay voters and Lawas where one of the state seats Ba Kelalan is under PKR.
Ahmad brushed off speculations that the relationship between Sarawak state government and the federal government is strained at the moment because of the disputes besetting SUPP and SPDP.
On the contrary, Sarawak had always maintained a strong and cordial relationship with Kuala Lumpur, he added.
He admitted that there were rough edges to be ironed out but those were not major issues and were not unsolvable.
Ahmad also pointed out that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had always kept a close personal relationship with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud and they had always consulted each other on major issues affecting the state.
On the perception that the federal government was backing Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui in the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) leadership tussle with Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Ahmad said it was not true.
He added that it was only natural for Chin to have strong rapport and frequent communications with federal leaders as he is a federal minister stationed in Putra Jaya but that did not mean the federal government was throwing its weight behind the embattled SUPP president.
When asked who would have the final say in the selection of candidates for the parliamentary seats in Sarawak in the coming general election, Ahmad stressed that such decisions were always arrived at after consultations between the chief minister, prime minister and president of the party.
“This is the way BN works, we decide on the candidates based on consensus and consultations,” he said.

Syarikat-syarikat bas berbohong untuk melindungi monopoli dan tipuan harga?

No additional charge on bus fares at Kuching Sentral

KUCHING: The Kuching Sentral Regional Bus Terminal costing RM100 million aims to provide a convenient and modern facilities for bus commuters and operators.

Speaking at a media conference after the official launching of the terminal, General Manager of ASSAR (Project and Business Development) Haji Ghazali Ismail clarified that the new bus terminal is a fully private funded project by ASSAR and is not a government project as perceived by members of the public.

Ghazali said they did apply for funds from the federal government but until today they did not receive it.Kuching Sentral Regional Bus Terminal is a subsidiary of Permodalan Assar Berhad, a state owned government linked company.

When asked to comment on the recent news regarding the dissatisfaction of Sarawak Buses Association about the Kuching Sentral, he said it was unfair for the people to say that they (Kuching Sentral) are charging excessively, especially with the 10 per cent additional fees.

“Bear in mind that bus fares are beyond us.It is not for us to decide on the fares. It is the decision of the Bus Association and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) because LPKP is the authority that gives the green light on what the bus fares should be for the public,” he explained.

He said that Kuching Sentral’s main objective is to provide better services through the idea of having modern and upgraded facilities at a bus terminal and to bring it to a level of higher quality.

“The location is very strategic and we intend to make this area a transportation hub.We try to improvise and put up a better system, though it may not be perfect but we try.Should there be any comment about this terminal, it ought to be constructive,” he said when asked to comment on news report that some quarters disagreed with the structure of the new terminal.

“We have incorporated suggestion from the Bus Association through the many sessions we had with them and we try to accommodate issues raised by them,” he said.

According to the news reported in a national daily, the Sarawak Buses Association said they will boycott the opening ceremony yesterday, but Ghazali said he did not think so.There were several bus operators who are members of the association present at the launching ceremony yesterday.

“Bear in mind that out of the 16 bus operators we have invited for the launching ceremony, not all are operating from this terminal. Some are operating in Sibu and other divisions so that is why they could not come,” he added.

“To shoot us down just because we are implementing a new system is unfair.Let us test the system first.

It is not right to preempt and just because we are doing the central ticketing system it is going to fail.

Some people are not able to accept change.“We must be able to adapt to changes because change is something we realise is coming. This particular change, we cannot just ignore.“The system we have at the Kuching Sentral now involves upgrades. It is not something we replicate from the previous terminal,” Ghazali explained.

On the 10 per cent charge that the new terminal will impose, he said they are going to charge the fees stressing that the 10 per cent fee does not equate to a 10 per cent increase in bus fares.

“Please be informed that the 10 per cent fee we charged does not translate into the passenger bus fares.Don’t get the statement wrong.A lot of people though that the 10 per cent charges for depot means an increase of 10 per cent more on the bus fare. That perception should be avoided,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Raymond Sim who is the Director of Sentral Solution Sdn Bhd, the Kuching Sentral operator said that not all the services they provide are chargeable because several of the services such as the individual bus counters, cargo spaces and others are free of charge.

“Our job is to provide facilities to maintain discipline in giving the best facilities and to issue ticket or boarding passes to protect the bus operator’s interest because of issues such as imitation of tickets can cause losses to them. This is the best we can do,” he pointed out.

He also reiterated that the rate they are charging is reasonable due to the services and facilities members of the public get at the new bus terminal, adding that they do not want to burden the end users.

“Another objective of charging the 10 per cent is because we want to promote this industry to avert the perception that people travelling by bus is regarded as lower and middle income group. There is also no monthly rental for the bus operators.

“With this terminal we hope to promote and change the people mindset of the misconception of using buses to travel,” he said.

All bus operators are given a grace period of two weeks until 15 March to move to Kuching Sentral.

As of now they can still operate from the old bus terminal at 4th Mile until the end of the grace period.

“Another features of the terminal is about the punctuality of the buses because there are problems of delays all thise while. In this case, the new terminal management will ensure that the buses leave as scheduled.“The punctuality and consistency of the buses will attract more people to the services offered here,” Sim added.

Asked if there are any charges for the parking bays, Sim said unless a bus is parked overnight, then there is a charge imposed which is RM500 per bus per day.

He also said they discouraged buses from parking at the terminal because it is supposed to be a bus terminal and not a bus depot. Each bus company has its own depot.
