Parti Rakyat Sarawak menolak pemansuhan parti-parti komponen dan Barisan Nasional menjadi satu parti politik

Nay to one-party BN

Masing says concept will see small racial groups become mute politically
KUCHING: The much-talked about proposal to turn Barisan Nasional (BN) into a single party has received the thumbs down from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing.
Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing
He feared that its implementation would see small ethnic groups losing their political voice.
The current BN structure, he opined, suited a multi-society nation like Malaysia because it allowed for smaller groups to have their say.
“One single party for BN will mean possible assimilation of smaller ethnic groups like Iban, Kadazan and others into a big entity, and this could result in the loss of political voice within the organisation.
“Personally, I don’t agree (to the proposal),” he said when contacted yesterday.
The proposal came from Gerakan acting president Datuk Chang Ko Youn, who urged BN to be turned into a single party to win back the people’s support and avoid racial problems.
A Bernama report published on Saturday quoted Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as saying that the proposal was rational but needed to be studied in detail to ensure continuous support from the people in the future.
Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president, said the proposal must be considered immediately by every component party and given a response as soon as possible.
Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said in Kuching on Saturday that the State BN was open to any discussion at the federal level regarding this proposal.
“If there is any discussion about the matter, let me attend the discussion first before giving further comments,” said Taib, who is also state BN chief.
PBB deputy information chief Datuk Peter Minos disagreed with proposals to have a new name for BN, although he liked the single BN party idea.
He argued that it would not be easy to sell the name because BN’s name has long been entrenched in the mind of Malaysians.
“Just BN or Barisan Nasional will do. In politics, a name matters,” he said when commenting on talks that BN is mulling a name change, and among the new
names mentioned was Parti 1Malaysia.
He also hoped that BN, if it remained a coalition of 14 components or eventually turned into a single party, would continue to focus on rural development to assist the rural folks who have been supporting BN to the hilt since day one, and again in the May 5 general election.
Minos cited Thailand as the best example of this strategy, where the ruling party headed by Yingluck Shinawatra is enjoying massive popular support because of massive rural development it had been focusing on.

'Black out' hari PRU-13 fitnah

- BERNAMA

Nancy out to prove naysayers wrong

By ZORA CHAN
zora@thestar.com.my

She said she never expected to be picked for the Cabinet but had always served her constituents and organisations that she joined with dedication.
KUCHING: Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri pledged to work doubly hard to prove her internal and external critics wrong on her appointment as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
“At first I thought it was a joke, I never expected anything.”
She said there was bound to be some dissatisfaction among senior party elected members for not being appointed to the Cabinet but being a Muslim, she believed in Qada and Qadar or fate.
“We can’t please everyone. Perhaps the Prime Minister wanted a mixture of junior and senior elected representatives. A mixture of technocrats who better understand the needs of the young generation.
“He also received a lot of feedback from the people who gave their opinions and proposals through Facebook and Twitter besides checking out our performances on the ground,” she told reporters at Kuching International Airport here yesterday.
She was asked to comment on talk of dissatisfaction among senior state Barisan Nasional elected representatives who either did not get any ministership or deputy post after serving four terms and above. Nancy made her political debut only in 2008.

"Najib should have been well-advised to take care of the Dayaks" - PRS Vice President YB Datuk Joseph Salang

Salang rejects post, saying it does not serve Dayaks

thestar KUCHING: Datuk Joseph Salang stands firm by his decision not to accept the Tourism Deputy Minister’s post, saying that it would not serve the pressing needs of the Dayaks well.
He said it was a known fact that the rural communities of the state needed various infrastructure and rural development more than anything else.
As such, for rural-based PRS, which had delivered all six of its parliamentary seats with convincing majority, to be offered posts relevant to its constituencies left much to be desired.
“Maybe there were some misinterpretation by the Federal Government somewhere. I’m not sure,” Salang said to reporters after attending PRS supreme council meeting at its headquarters in Pending here yesterday.
He said there was nobody to blame and the people should not accuse the Federal Government of not being serious in looking after the well-being of the Dayaks.
“I can only say that there could have been a disconnect ... in the sense that what we aspire to be, why we want to be members ... it could have been misinterpreted somewhere. Maybe, what the Federal Government did had been misinterpreted by us. Or maybe that’s probably what we deserve?
“I’m not hoping for anything for myself. But I sincerely hope for the right representation for the party and the Dayaks in general. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak should be wise enough to know what the Dayaks really need.
“The least I expect is that Najib should have been well-advised to take care of the Dayaks, and not to look at us as just part of the flower arrangement.
“We are there to help because what we are planting now will grow and bear fruits later. If we don’t do it now, what would happen five years later? What would happen in the coming state election? Those are the things we have to be mindful of,” said Salang.
He said he only knew of his appointment during the announcement on the 5pm news on Thursday.
He said initially both he and Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun were appointed deputy ministers.
However, after they consulted their president Tan Sri Dr James Masing, they were advised not to attend the rehearsal of the swearing-in ceremony to show their displeasure and at the same time not to embarrass Najib and the Agong.
“Masing also sent Najib an SMS saying that Entulu and I would not attend the rehearsal and the swearing-in ceremony because we refused to accept the posts.
“Only then did Najib call Masing to ask him to persuade us to attend. But our president told him (Najib) that we refused to attend because we were appointed deputy ministers only. Najib then agreed to give Entulu a minister’s post in his office,” said Salang.
He said he did not mind giving up his post, as what was important was that Dayak leaders should be given opportunities to serve their people.
“It need not be me. Look at it this way, PRS has six MPs and SPDP has four. Is it adequate when Najib gave us only two deputy ministers’ posts and eventually in Entulu’s case, there was some begging by the party before he was offered a minister’s post,” said Salang.
End of thestar article.
The question is WHO ill-advised Najib?

100% victory yet zero position in Najib Cabinet - Parti SPDP

By PHILIP HII
philiphii@thestar.com.my

SIBU: Disappointed SPDP leaders from at least 40 divisions statewide will collect at least 40 signatures this weekend for a petition that will be sent to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tomorrow.
Supreme council member James Laju Ambok said the purpose was to tell Najib that they were unhappy because no MP from SPDP was made a Federal minister or deputy minister.
He said the party was extremely disappointed with the complete exclusion of its MPs from the Federal Cabinet despite having successfully delivered four parliamentary seats — Mas Gading (Anthony Nogeh), Saratok (Tan Sri William Mawan), Baram (Anyi Ngau) and Bintulu (Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing).
“We won all our parliamentary seats in the just-concluded general election, a 100% achievement, but we got zero position in the Cabinet,” Laju, who is also Sibu Rural District Council chairman, complained here yesterday.
“We hope it was an honest oversight by the PM. We can’t and won’t imagine it to be any other reason,” he said.
“So, we appeal to the Prime Minister to rectify the situation as soon as possible because it is shocking and very unfair to SPDP,” Laju stressed.
He also said the party in fact expected to be rewarded better than previously when they had two deputy ministers.
“We don’t blame other parties or people. We are just asking for what should be ours. After all, our four MPs are very well qualified,” said Laju.
Tiong, he told reporters, should be made a minister as he is now serving his fourth term and was also Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club chairman while Nogeh is a lawyer by training, and Anyi is a former district officer.
Party president Mawan is not eyeing any Federal post preferring to stick to the state Cabinet as Social Development Minister.
“SPDP is capable of playing a very active role in the administration of the country. We humbly request the PM to give something favourable to the party,” Laju said, adding that SPDP was not thinking of leaving Barisan, just disappointed.
He urged the members and supporters to remain calm while waiting for the Prime Minister’s final decision.
The Sibu gathering was attended by SPDP deputy secretary-general Paul Igai and representatives from the party’s divisions of Bukit Assek, Bawang Assan, Dudong, Pelawan, Meluan, Nangka, Pelagus, Ngemah, Pakan, Tamin and Sarikei.

PRS and SPDP which are rural-base parties are not properly treated - Tan Sri James Jemut Masing

Headache for Najib; PRS rejects cabinet posts

Joseph Tawie
| May 17, 2013
PRS and SPDP remind Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak that the rural vote bank is with them and if not taken care of, 'somebody will come by and withdraw it'.
UPDATED
KUCHING: Bitter Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) supreme council members today unanimously agreed to reject all ministerial posts in Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s cabinet.
This means that Joseph Entulu who was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and Joseph Salang Gandum, a deputy minister, will not accept their posts.
A miffed Salang had in fact already earlier rejected the position.
Parti president James Masing said majority of the party’s supreme council members had agreed to reject Najib’s offer and felt that they were “sidelined” and “deserved to be treated better.”
PRS had delivered six parliamentary seats to Barisan Nasional’s 133 seat tally. They did better than some BN parties in peninsular who were suitably rewarded.
Without mincing his words Masing warned Najib not to toy with PRS and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) which had been totally ignored despite delivering four parliamentary seats.
“Don’t try to sideline us because we have the support of the rural people. It is not a warning.
“It is a fact, in case they don’t understand that we have six seats and four from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).
“PRS and SPDP which are rural-based parties are not properly treated by the present government.
“The rural areas in Sarawak are Barisan Nasional ‘fixed deposit’. If you don’t take care of it, somebody will come by and withdraw it,” warned Masing.
‘Give us appropriate portfolio’
Masing, who chaired the emergency supreme council meeting, said majority of the members felt that a ministerial post in the PM Department was inappropriate for PRS which was a rural based party.
“Joseph Entulu who was offered a post of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department sought the advice of the meeting which agreed that the president would discuss with the Prime Minister where Entulu should be.
“All the members of the supreme council are not happy that Entulu is a mere Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
“We want the Prime Minister to give us an appropriate portfolio, the one that could be of assistance to the rural people, portfolios such as Infrastructure and Agriculture,” he said.
He said the council felt the same way about Salang’s new position which was deputy minister of tourism.
“Such post is not of any assistance to the rural people. We just want a portfolio that is of assistance to the rural people, and not just any position” said Masing.
Masing revealed that the party was initially offered two deputy ministers’ posts which they felt was an insult because the party had delivered on its pledge to BN.
But it wasn’t until Masing informed Najib that PRS felt they were being sidelined and would not attend the swearing in ceremony that the PM tweaked his list before announcing it on Wednesday. In the new list, he named Entulu a full minister.
But even this move by Najib has not appeased the party.
Letter to PM
Asked what would happen if Najib did not agree to their demands, Masing said that the case would be brought before the supreme council members for a decision.
“I cannot tell you what the decision may be,” he added.
Urging those in power to look at the issue seriously, Masing said that he had written a letter to the Prime Minister seeking an appointment over their participation in the government.
“Of course we appreciate and understand he has the final say as to who should be in his cabinet. But we ask for his kind consideration and look at us again because we contribute quite substantially to the Barisan Nasional’s victory.
“The Prime Minister should not look at what is given to us but he should also look at what is given to the others.
“We feel that we have been sidelined,” he said, referring to Sarawak United People’s Party which retained only one of its seven seats but was given one full minister post.
“We want fairness and justice,” he added.
‘Illegal ministers in cabinet’
To make matters worse for Najib, DAP parliamentary leader and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang pointed out that five non-MPs appointed to the cabinet could be performing their tasks illegally and unconstitutionally as they have not been sworn in as Senators.
“Najib’s post-13GE cabinet has become a farce and even a joke as it has two illegal ministers and three illegal deputy ministers although they have gone through an unlawful oath-taking ceremony before the Yang di Pertuan Agong yesterday.
The two ministers are Paul Low and Abdul Wahid Omar (both Prime Minister’s Department), while the deputy ministers are P Waythamoorthy (PM’s Department), J Loga Bala Mohan (Federal Territories) and Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah (Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism).
“Was the two-hour first cabinet meeting yesterday tainted by illegality because of the attendance of two illegal ministers, Paul Low and Abdul Wahid?
“And today, Paul Low is already giving interviews as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, which he is not entitled to, as his ministerial appointment can only take effect when he is sworn in as Senator,” said Lim in a statement.
“I am given to understand that up to now, there has been no swearing in of the five for them to take up the two ministerial and three deputy ministerial appointments.
“Is there going to be a ‘rushed’ midnight swearing-in of the five as Senators?” he asked.

Masing in a huff over cabinet line-up

by Peter Sibon, reporters@theborneopost.com. May 16, 2013, Thursday
Masing
KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing is disappointed that PRS has been allocated just one full minister and a deputy minister post in the new cabinet.
“PRS is unhappy with the ministerial appointments. It appears that winners are not given due recognition,” Masing told The Borneo Post last night.
He was referring to the appointment of SUPP deputy president Datuk Richard Riot who has been elevated to a full minister even though the party lost its six other seats. Riot has been appointed minister of human resource.
On the other hand, Masing said the promotion of PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu as a full minister was expected and he thanked the prime minister for it.
“But what I can’t understand is the promotion of Riot as his party SUPP did badly in GE13. They only won one out of seven seats contested. Politics normally is not kind to losers but reward those who win. I am not surprised if PRS MPs are not happy with what happened.
“In terms of ministerial/deputy minister appointments among the MPs of the state’s BN component parties; PBB got 57 per cent; PRS 33 per cent; SUPP 100 per cent and SPDP zero per cent. Where’s the fairness?” he asked.
Besides Entulu, Datuk Joseph Salang has been appointed deputy minister of tourism.
Masing had hoped PRS would be allocated one full minister and two deputy ministers since the party had won all six seats it contested in the last general election.
Meanwhile, newly appointed Minister of Plantations Industries and Commodities Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas said his immediate task would be to focus on increasing the income of farmers.
“I can see that my immediate task will be looking at how to ensure our farmers have higher income. What it means is to focus on commodities which have good prices such as rubber, pepper and palm oil.
“And in the long run, we have to promote smallholdings among our farmers to achieve high income economy in the near future,” said Uggah.
He added that he would strive to maintain Malaysia’s position as a major exporter of palm oil in the global market.
“It will be a very heavy responsibility especially when oil palm is facing stiff competition from other oils,” he said.
“As for Sarawak, we will look at how we can further develop our NCR land into small holdings so it would benefit the owners,” said the MP for Betong.
Douglas, 58, who succeeds Tan Sri Bernard Dompok who lost in the just-concluded general election, was the natural resources and environment minister in the previous cabinet. Meanwhile, Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party president Tan Sri William Mawan said the federal cabinet list is not exhaustive.
“There may be some room for SPDP,” he said, adding that he would be talking to the prime minister on the matter soon.

Salang declines post of deputy tourism minister offered

Borneo Post on May 16, 2013, Thursday
Salang
KUCHING: PRS vice-president Datuk Joseph Salang has declined his appointment as Deputy Minister of Tourism.
He told The Borneo Post shortly after Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak unveiled his new cabinet line-up yesterday that he wanted to make way for young blood from his party to be appointed.
“I have been a deputy minister for nine years already, and I feel it is time to make way for young blood from PRS to replace me (in the federal cabinet).
”I will concentrate on my duties as an MP.”
Asked if he would accept if Najib tweaked his cabinet line-up and appoint him a minister, the Julau MP replied: “I will consider it.”
In the last cabinet line-up, Salang was Deputy Minister of Information, Communications and Culture.
Meanwhile, PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said he had tried to persuade Salang to accept the appointment but to no avail.
“I persuaded him to accept the offer but he refused. I can only empathise with him,” Masing said when contacted.
On PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun’s appointment as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Masing said Entulu accepted it with reluctance.

Sng Chee Hua bersara daripada politik

Utusan Borneo on May 13, 2013, Monday

Wong: SUPP lost to politics of ‘anger and hatred’

Borneo Post May 7, 2013, Tuesday
KUCHING: DAP’s strategy in playing the ‘anger and hatred’ cards in the just-concluded 13th general election is the main cause of SUPP’s disastrous outing.
SUPP Sibu chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said that DAP had gone all out to confuse and deceive Chinese voters by pledging to change the government which they claimed were not transparent and corrupt.
“I think DAP is fully responsible for all this because they have tried their best to confuse and mislead the Chinese voters by stating the need for a change in the government.
“DAP is stirring the emotions of the voters to instigate sentiments of hatred and anger towards BN, and their efforts successfully influenced the Chinese voters,” he said when asked to comment on SUPP’s loss, specifically in Sibu, Sarikei and Lanang.
Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development, admitted that what had transpired was an “urban voters’ tsunami”. He said the situation reflected an unhealthy political trend as this would create racial polarisation.
“This is not healthy politics as it creates racial polarisation in which the Chinese do not side with BN whereas the Bumiputeras remain loyal with BN. Our (SUPP) win in Serian constituency is the prime example of this.
“But, whatever it is, we have to accept the outcome and the voter’s choice.”
Asked on the future of SUPP, Wong said the party would be carrying out a post-mortem and look for the best solutions to move forward.

Roland Engan musykil keputusan pilihanraya parlimen Baram

Roland belum terima kekalahan

utusan Borneo May 8, 2013, Wednesday

BN’s slim majority in Baram raises questions - Borneo Post

May 8, 2013, Wednesday MARUDI: Barisan Nasional’s (BN) slim majority of 194 votes in the Baram parliamentary constituency has raised questions among political observers here. Newly-elected Baram member of parliament Anyi Ngau received 9,182 votes compared to 8,988 polled by Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Roland Engan, while independent candidate Patrick Sibat managed just 363 votes to lose his deposit. This was the lowest majority BN has ever received in the constituency. It was also the lowest majority for BN among all the seats it won in this parliamentary election. Political observers said Anyi is not unknown to the constituency as he was a popular former Marudi district officer, so constituents were likely to be demonstrating their frustrations via the ballot box. “We cannot deny that the opposition PKR has worked very hard throughout Baram over the last two years with issues such as the Baram Dam and petroleum royalty,” said one observer. He added that none of the ballot boxes during this election had 100 per cent votes for BN unlike during the 2011 state election. “The situation should be investigated from all angles as to why the voters are giving their votes to the opposition PKR this time round. There might also be some who are just frustrated voters. It seems that the areas that the BN lost were those from frustrated voters,” he said. In total 18,796 voters cast their votes in the Baram constituency – a turnout of 64 per cent of the total 29,385 registered voters – with 242 voters spoiling their ballots. During the 2008 parliamentary election, there were 24,425 registered voters in Baram and only 49.64 per cent or 12,126 of them voted. DAP has done very well - Karpal Singh

Light-hearted: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng speaking to the press in Penang. With him are Karpal, other Pakatan leaders and newly elected representatives.

GE13: DAP happy with election results, says Karpal

Light-hearted: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng speaking to the press in Penang. With him are Karpal, other Pakatan leaders and newly elected representatives.
KUALA LUMPUR: While PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has every right to question the legitimacy of the 13th general election, DAPchairman Karpal Singh said his party was happy with its performance in the polls.
“If they (PKR) feel that there has been electoral fraud in some constituencies they contested in, they can reject the results in these areas,” he said yesterday.
Anwar had refused to accept the outcome of the elections, claiming that there had been vote-rigging and electoral discrepancies.
Karpal also expressed satisfaction with DAP's win of 38 parliamentary seats in the polls.
“DAP has done very well, especially in Gelang Patah, where the win was unexpected,” he added.
However, party adviser Lim Kit Siang, who defeated Barisan Nasional'sDatuk Abdul Ghani Othman in Gelang Patah, said the party would file an election petition to reject the results in areas where it had lost by small margins.
He said the petition would be filed after a detailed analysis of the election results.
“Pakatan Rakyat will look into the constituencies found with problems of electoral fraud before taking the next step, which is necessary to ensure the results are fair and accurate,” he told a press conference yesterday.
Meanwhile, PAS said it would only lodge complaints of electoral irregularities if it found “strong evidence” of fraud, said party secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali.
“We will gather feedback from the ground on claims of electoral fraud. Reports will be lodged with the Election Commission if there is strong evidence to support the claims,” he added.
PAS saw its parliamentary seats reduced to 21 compared to 23 in 2008.
The party also failed to defend Kedah while it is still reeling from the shock defeats of deputy president Mohamad Sabu, vice-president Salahuddin Ayub and central committee member Datuk Husam Musa.
Mustafa said PAS accepted that “you win some and lose some”.
“The reality is that the government of the day is formed by the winning side. The election results are balanced' and we accept the people's verdict.
“We did well in defending Kelantan and Selangor, and we are happy to have made inroads in Barisan strongholds.
“We nearly managed to create a repeat of the PAS takeover in Terengganu in the 1999 elections,” he added.

Guan Eng didesak adakan semula pemilihan CEC - Tunku Abdul Aziz

GE13: Six not cops and they didn’t vote here, ACP Azam clarifies

KUCHING: No police personnel was involved in the advance voting at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM) base here on Tuesday as alleged by state DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen.
Investigations carried out by the police immediately after Chong’s claims were reported in the press revealed that the six personnel in question were actually TUDM’s, said ACP Azam Abd Hamid, the state police media relations officer for the polls.
“They are based in Kuching but are undergoing training in Labuan and they had returned for advance voting although they were listed for postal voting. The postal ballot papers were sent to Labuan but they had not received them.
“They did not vote (here) and were directed to return to Labuan,” he explained.
Chong, who is contesting in Bandar Kuching, made the allegation at a press conference on Wednesday, claiming that the six were listed as both postal voters and advance voters.
He accused the Election Commission of cheating and took the opportunity to urge all his party’s supporters to come out to vote on Sunday, adding that it was pointless to lodge an official complaint now.
In an unrelated case, ACP Azam said an investigation was carried out into the allegation that a corporal had voted twice — as an advance voter and as a postal voter — in Sri Aman.
He said the corporal had served in Serian before being transferred to Sri Aman and from their investigations, they found that the corporal had applied to become a postal voter while he was in Serian but when he was transferred, he registered himself as an advance voter.
“On the day for advance voting, the name of the personnel was listed in the polling centre and he had cast his vote. After that, he received a postal ballot paper from his old formation (in Serian) but he had returned the ballot paper unmarked to the Election Commission.
“He did not vote twice as reported by certain quarters,” said ACP Azam.
