PBB Vice Presidents 2013

Toyad making a come comeback?

October 15, 2013
Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud received a resounding endorsement to continue as PBB president from its 71 divisions.
KUCHING: Former tourism minister Muhd Leo Michael Toyad appears to be coming out of the political woodwork lending weight to speculations of a bigger role awaiting him.
Toyad will contest against four state assistant ministers and a former state assemblyman for one of the three vice-president posts for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Sarawak in the party’s election tomorrow.
Toyad, a Melanau, has been on the local political observers’ checklist as a possible successor to Chief Minister Taib Mahmud.
His comeback bid appears to lend weight to these rumours. Ageing Taib is under pressure from the federal capital to relinquish his hold on the state which he has helmed since 1982.
But PBB’s spectacular performance in the May general election delivering to federal Barisan Nasional all 14 parliamentary seats it contested has further consolidated his position.
Under the current circumstances, Taib PBB is now the second biggest party in BN replacing MCA which won only seven seats.
Having said this, Taib is aware that time is not on his side. His focus post elections has been to tighten the reign on his party and ease the tensions in his Pesaka and Bumiputera wings.
The race for his seat has seen internal sabotage and private alignments forged with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
But Taib has thus far out maneuvered attempts to pull the rug from under his feet.
Toyad’s name began circling the wings sometime last year and FMT had reported the speculated rumours. His bid to return to active politics is telling.
Taib uncontested
Toyad has Taib’s backing so his stab at the vice-presidency should bring about positive returns.
In the list announced by the PBB’s 13th Convention Election Committee chairman Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar yesterday, the other candidates in the race with Toyad are assistant ministers Daud Abdul Rahman (Chief Minister’s office), Abdul Wahab Aziz (Housing), Talip Zulpilip (Tourism); Julaihi Narawi (Industrial Development) and, Beting Maro former state assemblyman Bolhassan Di.
Mohamad Asfia said party president Taib was returned unopposed for the post after nominations closed at 5pm yesterday.
Taib received a resounding endorsement from the party’s 71 branches which wanted him to continue holding the position.
His two deputies, Alfred Jabu Numpang and Amar Abang Johari Tun
Openg, were also returned unopposed, alongside two senior vice-presidents in Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Douglas Uggah Embas.
Two vice-presidents for the Pesaka (non-Muslim) wing – MichaelManyin Jawong and Alexander Nanta Linggi – also retained their postsuncontested.
Meanwhile, 14 candidates will contest for the 11 posts as supreme council members for the Bumiputera (Muslim) wing of the party.
Nine others posts in the supreme council reserved for the Pesaka wing were won uncontested.

Tradition of politics strongly entrenched in Jabu family

Borneo Post October 13, 2013, Sunday
KUCHING: The run-up to the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) party election next week reflects the tradition of politics which is strongly entrenched among immediate family members of its deputy president, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who is  Deputy Chief Minister.
Equally active in politics is his wife, Dato Sri Empiang, 69, who is once again given the trust and confidence by the party grassroots to continue helming PBB’s women movement after being returned unopposed when nominations for the top posts closed yesterday.
Known for playing an active role in the transformation of the Dayak community in Sarawak into a more modern and progressive one, she is the first Iban woman to become a member of the Dewan Negara, following her appointment as senator for two terms in 2004.
Following in the couple’s footsteps is their eldest child, Gerald Rentap, 43, who also won uncontested the PBB Youth movement’s deputy president post after nominations for its top leadership closed.
Gerald, who holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from the Australian La Trobe University, is currently executive director of the Kuching-based Utahol Management Sdn Bhd.
Previously appointed as Youth secretary-general, his elevation as the new deputy
chief is about the only ‘big’ change in the movement’s hierarchy, which has shown a similar result in the PBB  Women movement.
Empiang will continue to work closely with her deputy, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, currently state Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister, after the latter also retained her post unopposed, to lead the party’s women movement to greater heights.
Similarly, Gerald, from the Pesaka wing, will also continue PBB’s tradition of unity and solidarity by supporting party Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof, 51, from the Bumiputera wing, in having retained the top post unopposed.
Fadillah is also federal Works Minister.
The status quo for the PBB top leadership is also expected to remain with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who is very likely to stay on as party president, Jabu as deputy president (Pesaka wing) and   Housing and Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg as deputy president (Bumiputera wing).
The five-day PBB triennial delegates convention will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, beginning Oct 18.— Bernama

Fadillah belum tahu kedudukannya dalam PBB

by Clare Cinderella. Utusan Borneo October 7, 2013, Monday

Sarawak’s decision to be part of Malaysian federation right: Moggie

by Caroline Jackson. Posted on October 2, 2013, Wednesday
KUCHING: As a young Sarawakian, who was schooled and groomed into adulthood during post-war British colonial rule, former works minister Tan Sri Leo Moggie said Sarawak’s decision in 1963 to be part of the Malaysian federation was right.
He said, 50 years after independence within Malaysia, Sarawak and Sarawakians were now involved not only in events in the state but should also play an increasing role in shaping the country’s future as a moderate plural society that was comfortable in living its diversity.
“Looking back, for all the shortcomings that are yet to be overcome and expectations yet to be fulfilled, Sarawak’s decision in 1963 to be part of the Malaysian federation was right. By and large Sarawak and Sarawakians have travelled well in the last 50 years.”
Moggie said this during a recent talk at the annual general meeting of the Sarawak Association at the Royal Overseas League in London.
Moggie, who had helmed the now deregistered Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), was in the state cabinet in Sarawak from 1976 to mid-1978 and in the federal cabinet between 1978 and March 2004.
He said there were gaps and imbalances in development, particularly for the rural areas and rural communities, that had to be seriously addressed but the people had adapted to the expectations of the new while retaining some influences of the past, including those of the Brooke and the British colony.
The initial phase of the Malaysian journey was very much a period of adjusting to the dynamics of the federal system where the aspirations of the state at times were at odds with the expectations of a central government determined to impose its role, he said.
“That testy relationship was compounded by the need to contend with the threat of security, first from Sukarno’s Indonesia, then from the North Kalimantan Communist Party and the Pasukan Rakyat Kalimantan Utara (Paraku),” he said, adding that both these two main hurdles were cleared in the 1970s.
However, he said, the close relationship between the federal and state governments that followed, allowed for the development phase of Sarawak to gather momentum to the stage that was seen today – with the ordinary people getting along well with each other and moderation continuing to be mainstream in Malaysian public opinion, despite the antics of some politicians.
Moggie also recalled that 50 years ago, he was amongst the group of young impressionable Sarawakians pursuing a university education overseas, who left Sarawak as subjects of a British colony but returned as citizens of Malaysia.
“For us, our working lives have witnessed the unfolding progress that has been part of the Sarawak story for the last 50 years. In our own ways, we have contributed in turning Sarawak into what it is today,” he said, adding some were later to become top civil servants, prominent educators, successful businessmen, while some others, like himself, after a stint in the civil service, made the conscious decision to move into serious politics.
He said Malaysia was to have been formally established on Aug 31, 1963 to coincide with the sixth anniversary of the independence of Malaya but was postponed because of objections from Indonesia and the Philippines and, as a result, a United Nations Malaysia Mission was sent to report on the wishes of the people of Sarawak and Sabah who were in favour of Malaysia.
The Malaysia Agreement was passed by the first fully-elected Council Negeri on Sept 5, 1963, and the formal establishment of Malaysia, comprising Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah (North Borneo) and Singapore, was proclaimed on Sept 16, 1963. – Bernama

14 Okt tarikh tutup pencalonan badan induk PBB
Utusan Borneo September 28, 2013, Saturday
