PLANNING FOR NEXT ELECTION: Taib (second right) talks to his principal private secretary Datu Mustapha Han (third left) as Jabu (right), Abang Johari (fourth left) and others look on.
KUCHING: The final list of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) candidates for the next parliamentary election is still under wraps but the party is confident whoever it fields it will again make a clean sweep of all the seats it contests.
Deputy president II Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg when asked on the list yesterday said the candidates in the upcoming 13th general election would be announced by Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting which was attended by most elected representatives of the party at the party’s headquarters here, he added the final decision on whether to retain an incumbent or switch them to other seats lies with the BN chairman.
“I cannot confirm whether the incumbent MPs will be retained, for the confirmation just wait for the announcement from the Prime Minister.”
Abang Johari admitted PBB might have problems in some constituencies but they are small and would not affect the party’s chances.
When asked on the situation in Batang Lupar seat, which was said to have encountered some problems, he replied: “No (big problems). Maybe have some small problems but they are nothing.”
Taib concerned about party’s preparation for upcoming election
On the presence of the party’s incumbent MPs at the meeting, he said it was not a surprise as they were supposed to be looking after their own areas.
“Since the meeting is about PBB’s preparation for the GE13, of course you will see the incumbents,” he said, adding that the meeting was merely to discuss on the mobilisation of party’s election machinery.
He added that PBB president Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who chaired the meeting, was concerned about the party’s preparation for the coming election.
The meeting was also part of PBB’s preparation to brief Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on their party’s level of preparedness for the GE13.
In the last general election, PBB won all the 14 seats it contested namely Santubong, Petra Jaya, Kota Samarahan, Mambong, Batang Sadong, Batang Lupar, Betong, Tanjong Manis, Mukah, Igan, Kapit, Sibuti, Limbang and Lawas.
Among those who attended the meeting were deputy president I Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Alfred Jabu, senior vice-president II Dato Sri Douglas Uggah Embas and secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
However, senior vice president I Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan was not seen when the top leaders and incumbents left the venue.
