BUFFALO farmers in northern Sarawak will receive a boost from the ceiling allocation of RM8 million from the federal government under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), the august house was told yesterday.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang also announced the Department of Agriculture (DOA) will receive an allocation of RM2 million for 2011 and 2012.
“This is to assist buffalo farmers in Limbang and Miri divisions. The fund will be used for the purchase of between 400 and 500 breeding buffaloes,” he said.
Jabu, who is also Modernisation of Agriculture Minister, was answering a question from Paulus Palu Gumbang (BN – Batu Danau).
He said the other aim of the fund is to develop five entrepreneurs from the buffalo farming community.
“These entrepreneurs will also cater for feed-lotting activities of buffalo steers and source for markets for the buffaloes,” he said.
On a related matter, Jabu said the DOA had purchased 800 heads of breeder cattle and 2,120 heads of breeding goats under the State Livestock Programme this year.
He added these cattle and goats were for sale and distribution to progressive farmers including in Batu Danau and other suitable areas in the Limbang Division.
