KUCHING: The Land of Hornbill is now the only state in Malaysia which United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has yet to spread its wings.
There were many attempts made in the past by the local Sarawakians, including Dato Sri Datuk Abang Abu Bakar Mustapha and Affendi Jeman, but all failed to materialize.
All of them were convinced that UMNO is the only party that could protect the Bumiputeras – despite of the fact that the Malays in Semenanjung are distancing themselves from the party as shown in the last General Election.
However, there are a group of people who want to bring UMNO into Sarawak not because they believe the conviction that UMNO is the Malay/Bumiputera savior but just because they just want to make themselves continue to be relevant to those in the corridor of power.
Dato Sri Tiong King Sing is one of those in this group.
When he spread the rumor during the last Parliament sitting that Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud wanted to make Sarawak as an independent country, he didnt expect Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud would get to know about the rumour as well as he being identified as the rumourmonger.
Right now Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is seemed to be quite and not making any move on this matter.
However, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing might have confided to his close friends in UMNO that a new strategy has to be devised because Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is now aware of the plan to accuse him to make an attempt to pull Sarawak out from Malaysia; and UMNO has to step in to save the day!
Dato Sri Tiong King Sing could not rely on Sarawak Progressive and Democratic Party (SPDP) President Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom to give him the necessary backing should Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud decides to make a move.
As a matter of fact, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing was aware – and because of this he was not happy – that Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had offered a business deal to Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom as to help Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom to break free from the influence of Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
The offer was not only made once but thrice.
However, Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom didn’t take the offer by which only he himself knew why.
Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was aware that Dato Sri Tiong King Sing was not a kind of politician who would kowtow to his boss because he also wanted to be a boss.
It is because of Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom’s gentle character that has prevented any possibility of leadership crisis between him and Dato Sri Tiong King Sing in SPDP.
Dato Sri James Jemut Masing would have pulled his parang ilang out from its sheath if any of his men also wanted to be a boss.
Dato Sri Tiong King Sing believed that Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was trying to push him aside as to make him irrelevant to SPDP as well as state politics.
This belief was further supported by the fact that he didnt get any business from Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in the last 10 years.
Hence, for the sake of his survival, politically and economically, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has to go.
However, the departure of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud would not automatically make him relevant to the state politics if UMNO failed to be installed as the backbone party of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN).
