KUCHING: When local newspapers published the news on the appoinment of Dayang Madinah Tun Abang Haji Openg as a senator, many were wondering why the Pesaka wing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) didn't object.
The reason being Dayang Madinah Tun Abang Haji Openg who is from the Bumiputera wing was taking the senatorship quota for the Pesaka wing.
She is to replace Dato Sri Empiang Jabu whose term expires on July 11 after serving for two terms.
With this appointment, which was proposed by the PBB woman deputy chief Datin Fatimah Abdullah and seconded by the Bekenu state assemblywoman Rosey Yunus from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) in the sitting of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) this week, Dayang Madinah Tun Openg would be the first Sarawakian Malay woman to be a senator.
The other Sarawakian woman who is now serving her senatorship is Doris Sophia Brodie who is an Iban.
However she is not from PBB but Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).
The Pesaka wing members were wondering what was a deal between the Bumiputera and Pesaka wings.
Some regard this as a sign that Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg is making an ascend to the Chief Ministership.
It is an open secret that Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg was chosen by the Pesaka Wing for the Bumiputera wing members to be their leader in 1998.
The Pesaka wing was supposed to honour the understanding that its members were to give support to a leader chosen by the majority of the Bumiputera wing members.
But the Pesaka wing members decided not to honour the sacred understanding and threw their support to Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg.
The Pesaka wing already 'agreed' to have Datuk Patinggi Alfred Jabu Numpang for the Pesaka quota but at the same time the wing also wanted to choose a leader for the Bumiputera wing.
Thus, the end result is Datuk Amar Adenan Satem lost the contest for a deputy president of PBB despite of the fact that he was supported by the majority of the Bumiputera wing members.
If this is to be used as an indication, the Pesaka wing is actually doing a favor to its blue-eyed boy.
The Pesaka wing is giving a strong signal to all that Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg is enjoying strong support from its members to be the successor of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang was seemed to be pleased with the appointment of Dayang Madinah Tun Abang Haji Openg who is a sister of Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg.
And interestingly other members of Pekasa wing are also singing the same tune of song.
It seems that something has been agreed between Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg which many the Pesaka wing members would like to know.
However, if Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg fails to honour his promise (may be to help a protege of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang), there is going to be a big chaos in the party.
Of course the Pesaka wing members would not demonstrate in the street like what Pakatan Rakyat members would love to do.
What they would do is to boycott the coming state election.
If this is the case, then we are going to see more oppositions in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) after the state election.
As a PBB member said bluntly: "It is an insult to us in the Pesaka wing to see our quota is being given to the Bumiputera wing without giving us any reason."
