Wooing Chinese voters

PUTRAJAYA: Winning back Chinese voters is BN’s biggest challenge in the coming general election
The biggest challenge facing Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state in the coming general election is winning back the Chinese voters.
Datuk Ahmad Maslan, the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and BN information chief, told The Borneo Post at his office here on Monday that this situation was the same in all other states.
As such, the urban Chinese majority seats would be the ones most vulnerable to the opposition’s challenge.
He added that the federal government might not have engaged the Chinese enough in the past but it was now rectifying the situation by listening to them more.
Although he acknowledged that it would not be an easy task, Ahmad said BN was optimistic that it would win back some of the Chinese voters and hopefully wrest some of the seats from the opposition.
“We believe the Chinese are rational people and they want peace and progress as much as anyone. If we can assure them that their needs too would be looked into, I am sure many of them would vote for BN.”
However, he stressed that BN was not taking the rural seats in the state for granted and the BN government had been working hard in bringing development to these areas and going to the ground to listen to their problems.
The federal government had been trying its best to deliver the promises of projects made to the rural areas and Najib himself had gone to places like Lachau to find out about their problems.
To ensure that the projects promised were delivered, the federal government had set up the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) to monitor their progress, he added.
Despite all these efforts Ahmad said BN was aware that there were also some rural seats in the state where BN would face tough challenges in the election.
When pressed to name the seats, Ahmad mentioned the coastal seats of Batang Lupar and Batang Sadong where PAS seemed to have made some inroads among the Malay voters and Lawas where one of the state seats Ba Kelalan is under PKR.
Ahmad brushed off speculations that the relationship between Sarawak state government and the federal government is strained at the moment because of the disputes besetting SUPP and SPDP.
On the contrary, Sarawak had always maintained a strong and cordial relationship with Kuala Lumpur, he added.
He admitted that there were rough edges to be ironed out but those were not major issues and were not unsolvable.
Ahmad also pointed out that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had always kept a close personal relationship with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud and they had always consulted each other on major issues affecting the state.
On the perception that the federal government was backing Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui in the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) leadership tussle with Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Ahmad said it was not true.
He added that it was only natural for Chin to have strong rapport and frequent communications with federal leaders as he is a federal minister stationed in Putra Jaya but that did not mean the federal government was throwing its weight behind the embattled SUPP president.
When asked who would have the final say in the selection of candidates for the parliamentary seats in Sarawak in the coming general election, Ahmad stressed that such decisions were always arrived at after consultations between the chief minister, prime minister and president of the party.
“This is the way BN works, we decide on the candidates based on consensus and consultations,” he said.

  1. Somebody if not Taib created the scam about SUPP AGM and the fire/burning of the HQ. Just as well as the Sarawak Chinese were coming round to support reforms for Sarawak but now with the scam and apparent split, the Chinese BN supporters and the general community are in disarray much to Taib's glee.

But they won't be blind to this and what's left would be which wealthy or apparently wealthy Chinese pressure groups would sway the voters or which 'ampu' SUPP members will force their hands at the expense of the average Chinese. Timber, mines, contract jobs are on their minds.

  2. Who cares about Nancy and Rohani?

All they do is give speeches, acted clever and fooled the kampung folks.

    Good riddance!

Rohani was especially working against the interests of small traders, Malays included and especially so by helping big Banks stamp out self help thrift and traditional savings scheme. That's not constructive but would only enslave those small bisness people by being indebted to the banks!

So much for Rohani, always against the better judgement for the small citizens!

  3. KUCHING: The small majority he obtained in last year’s state polls cannot be used as a yardstick to measure BN’s chances in the coming general election, claimed Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor yesterday.
In the last April 16 state election, Razaili defeated Abang Ahmad Kerdee Abang Masagul from PAS by a majority of only 391 votes. He polled 3,069 while his opponent garnered 2,678 votes in a straight fight.
“The situation is not going to be the same this time. Even in the last state election PAS wasn’t really strong. The small majority was due to various factors, including internal sabotage and protests from our own people.
“This time around, I believe that it will be a different story altogether. This is also because the long outstanding issues in my constituency basically have all been solved,” he said.
He singled out the two major issues in Beting Maro frequently bandied about in the past as basic amenities, especially treated water supply, and matters related to native customary rights (NCR) land.
“These are the most common issues that the oppositions harped on in the past but both are no longer relevant now,” he said.
On the water issue, especially in areas in Beladin and Pusa, he said efforts were ongoing to bring the supply to the villages by underwater pipelines right from Saratok.
“The water treatment plant in Saratok is being upgraded so as to cater for a bigger area and this will include Pusa and Beladin,” he said.
He added that the government had approved an allocation of RM120 million to increase the capacity of the water treatment plant and another RM19 million to commission the marine water pipeline from Saratok to Pusa and Beladin.
As for issues regarding NCR land, he said they were now considered solved following the government’s efforts to carry out perimeter survey throughout the state under the new NCR initiative.
“Under the programme, a few areas in the constituency had already been surveyed while bigger portions of land had been developed for oil palm plantation under joint venture projects between land owners, government linked companies and agencies,” he stressed.
With all these developments, Razaili said he was pretty confident that BN would not face much problems in defending
Batang Lupar in the coming election which is speculated to be called soon.
Batang Lupar is one of the 31 parliamentary constituencies in the state and is presently represented by Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
The other state seat under Batang Lupar is Lingga which is represented by Simoi Peri also of PBB.

  4. KUCHING: A grassroots leader in Batang Lupar has come out in the open to defend incumbent MP Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim by stating that she is still a ‘winnable’ candidate for the coming parliamentary election.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Gran-Stumbin branch deputy chairman Kunjang Nanang said Rohani, who is Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives, still has strong support from the grassroots due to her good track record.
He believes that should Barisan Nasional (BN) replace her and win the seat, there is no guarantee
that the new Member of Parliament will be made a deputy
    minister.
“Under normal circumstances, any new BN YB (elected representative) regardless of his origin will not be given the deputy minister post immediately while there is a good chance Rohani can continue to become one.
Those who wish to see YB
Datuk Rohani replaced are overlooking this point,” he said yesterday.
“YB Datuk (Rohani) will have more power and more allocation being a deputy minister. As of now, she is still winnable by virtue of that fact,” he added.
“And because of this, we in Gran-Stumbin branch strongly believe that YB Datuk is a winnable candidate. She represents not only the constituency of Batang Lupar but the whole state of Sarawak, being a deputy minister,” he said further.
Kunjang pointed out that their undivided support for Rohani was not based on hearsay or impulse but because of the fact that Rohani had a good track
record in terms of delivering development to Batang Lupar and the previous constituency she
first served as Member of Parliament.
He was commenting on the statements issued separately by two groups within PBB in December last year.
In the statements, the groups from Lingga and Kampung Seberang Sebuyau lobbied for engineer Mohd Eden Mohd
Ali, 56, to replace Rohani as BN candidate in the coming
    polls.
Hailing from Kampung Semarang, Meludam, Mohd Eden is PBB Beting Maro deputy divisional chairman for more than seven years.
His was, however, not the only name bandied about to replace Rohani.

  7. Rohani Karim: Giving of RM19 billion in subsidies is for people’s well-being
    Wednesday, 01 February 2012 10:48 | Written by | | |
SEBUYAU (Sarawak): The giving of subsidies amounting to nearly RM19 billion this year is proof that the government is sensitive to the plight of the people, especially the poor and low-income group.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Datuk Rohani Karim said the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government understood the needs of the people and ensured that they were not heavily burdened by rising price of essential goods by continuing with providing subsidies for these goods.

“There is no government anywhere else which is willing to provide subsidies like the BN government does and this is all for the well-being of the people,” she told Bernama, here, yesterday.

Rohani said for this year, the government estimated RM18.92 billion in subsidies for commodities such as sugar (RM567 million), flour (RM150.09 million), cooking oil (RM1.2 billion) and petrol, diesel and LPG (RM17 billion).

Last year, the government allocated RM19.99 billion in subsidies for these commodities.

Rohani said besides subsidies to control the price of daily necessities, the government also provided facilities like the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) and COOP1M products which were sold at up to 50 per cent less than products of other brands in the market.

Other facilities include the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) for households earning less than RM3,000 a month, schooling aid (RM100) and the RM200 book voucher (Baucer Buku 1Malaysia) for Form Six, matriculation, college and university students.

“Yesterday, the government launched yet another initiative, the Skim Amanah Rakyat 1Malaysia (SARA 1MALAYSIA) to help those earning less than RM3,000 monthly,” Rohani said.

“With this latest effort, it is hoped that those concerned can invest their money for a better future,” she added.- Bernama
