NEWLY elected assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong (DAP-Dudong) is calling on the government to look into the condition of roads in Sibu.

In debating the motion of thanks on the Head of State’s address, Yap named at least five roads including two protocol roads in Sibu that require immediate attention from the authorities.

They are Jalan Kong Yit Khim and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, Jalan Wong King Huo and roads serving Sibu Jaya. Citing the protocol road Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman or New Airport Road, he said its poor condition was “a shame to Sibu”.

“Calls for the road to be maintained had fallen on deaf ears. The road surface is uneven and undulating, particularly from Mile 5 to Mile 10. The road condition is so bad that I totally agree with Bukit Assek member (Wong Ho Leng) who said in Parliament that the road is actually the worst road in Sibu.

“It is unfit for traffic. I also agree with him when he said that even horses will trip and fall on this stretch of road,” he said. On another matter, Yap urged the government to set up a polyclinic in Sibu Jaya which would serve at least 3,000 households in the area, apart from upgrading facilities in Lanang Clinic.

“It may also be necessary to set up a clinic in Durin Bazaar to provide more effective healthcare to patients coming from Kanowit, Durin Kiba, Batu Wong, Julau and so forth,” he suggested.

Another opposition backbencher Fong Pau Teck (DAP-Pujut) urged that priority be given to Sarawakian companies to participate in the state’s oil and gas industry.

He stressed that as these natural resources were found in the state, the main players in the oil and gas industry should be Sarawakians.

He said more efforts were needed to tackle the squatters issue which is a worrying trend in Miri.
