Biological mother sought to facilitate adoption

KUCHING: The Welfare Department is looking for three-year-old Alice Shan Zhong’s biological mother or next of kin.

Alice’s biological mother, known only as Christina, gave her to her current guardian Ten Lee Jung when she was just three days old.

A press release said Christina, believed to be an Iban from Betong, used to work as a domestic helper for Ten’s neighbour in Tabuan Jaya.

Prior to Alice’s birth, Christina and Ten came to an agreement for the latter to adopt her.

In February 2008, Christina handed Alice over to Ten and promised to return within two weeks to register the child and complete the adoption process.

However, Christina failed to return and could not be traced. This has led to difficulty in registering Alice and completing her adoption process.

Under Section 17(1)(d) of the Child Act 2001, Alice was produced in the magistrates’ court for children in Kuching for the issuance of temporary custody.

During a hearing on May 10, the court placed Alice under Ten’s care until the department produces a protection report for her.

Those who know Alice’s mother or next of kin are requested to contact Azlina Mohd Salleh on 082-444251 or 082-448534.
