DUN Sitting (Day Three): RM1.4 bln road to make Kapit accessible in 5 years

(Nov 03, 2010)

IN five years’ time, Kapit would be connected to the whole of Sarawak by land with the soon to be built RM1.4 billion Sangan (Tatau)-Sg Anap road.

Stretching 136 kilometres, the Sangan-Sg Anap route would connect with the Nanga Mulukun-Kapit road when completed.

With Tatau already easily reached to Bintulu by land, this project would ensure that the whole state could easily drive to Kapit via Tatau, Bintulu.

Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong told the press at the State Legislative Complex yesterday, that the road would be a R3 Public Works Department-standard road and the proposed project has been approved by the state.

“However, tender for the first phase project will be closed by Nov 18. Hopefully, the winning bid (contractor) can start the job immediately and I also hoped that this approved road would be completed within five years time,” he added.

Manyin, who is also the Tebedu assemblyman, stressed that the project was under the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) project and not under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

In addition, he took the time to clarify on the non-existent of Pelagus rapid road as enquired by Kapit MP Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“What transpired recently in the paper about the unavailability of roads at the Pelagus rapid (Kaki Wong-Pala Wong), I would like to stress that there is an abandoned eight kilomotres timber track that we are now going to tar sealed.

“But, we are going to make sure that it would be an all-weathered road (gravel surface) and under the proposed planning, we are going to cut the route short, lessening the length to four kilometres.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has already started on the works and the delay is not the department’s fault,” explained Manyin.

He stated that PWD Kapit division has been alerted to start the job immediately.

In addition, the RM8 million project Pelagus rapid by-pass sealing project would also see a construction of three Bailey bridges which Manyin highlighted could be used immediately.

“The erecting of the bridges would only take a week or two to complete.”

Manyin also noted that only gravel surface was used for the Pelagus rapid by-pass which was due to Sangan-Sg Anap project on the other side of the river.

“When this road is constructed, it would make our RM8 million Pelagus rapid by-pass a redundant,” he continued.

Also present were the ministry’s permanent secretary Safri Zainuddin and assistant director in charge of Roads, Phillip Ng.
