PPP sends letter to join the state BN

KUCHING: Rumour mills are working overtime now as it is said that People's Progressive Party (PPP) has submitted a letter to the state BN chairman Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud requesting for an admission into the ruling coalition.

It is also said that in the letter, the party has expressed its desire to help the state BN in the Sibu election.

It is most likely that Taib will just keep quiet about the letter as if he never saw the letter - as he did in the past whenever he received letters from the party.

This time around, there is no reason for Taib not continue what he always did when he saw a letter from PPP.

Initially the party thought that it was sufficient just to write to Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) offering its assistance for the by-election in Sibu.

However, this 'kind' gesture was not augured well with the party leaders.

The SUPP youth leader Sih Hua Tong told the party bluntly that before it wanted to assist, it had to clear its status with the state BN.

It is due to this that PPP has decided to write a letter to the state BN.

On the record, the party is not welcome here in Sarawak despite of the fact that it is a component party of BN at the federal level.

As Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Dato Sri James Jemut Masing summed it up, the political landscape is already crowded with four parties - i.e. Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), SUPP, PRS and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) - and therefore PPP's presence is not welcome.

The Sibu parliamentary by-election possibly sees a three corner fight between an independant candidate Narawi Haron, Robert Lau Hui Yew (the BN/SUPP candidate) and Wong Ho Leng (the PR/DAP candidate).
