YB Julaihi Narawi telah mendapat undi tinggi dalam pemilihan Majlis Tertinggi di Konvensyen PBB 2010.  Dikhabarkan bahawa YB Julaihi Narawi akan bertanding jawatan Naib Presiden PBB (antara jawatan yang disandang Yb Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman) pada Konvensyen PBB bulan Mei tahun ini.

Sebanaku berharap semua pemimpin -pemimpin PBB khususnya berkenaan Batang Lupar bersatu untuk memastikan kemenangan BN.

KUCHING: Whatever speculations grassroots have about Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim, she is set to defend Batang Lupar which she won uncontested in the 2008 general election unless the top BN leadership decides otherwise.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said as far as the party was concerned, the incumbent MP was the sole nominee submitted to the BN leadership for endorsement.

“So as it is, she (Rohani) is our candidate for Batang Lupar in the coming general election unless Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib (Tun Razak) decides otherwise.

“As far as Batang Lupar is concerned, we submitted only one name which is the present MP, so it is unlikely that she will be replaced,” he said.

In that respect, he said, people on the ground should stop lobbying but instead beef up the party’s machinery at the grassroots level to ensure victory for BN.

He said this when asked to comment on the requests by certain quarters that PBB leadership drop the Batang Lupar incumbent and replace her with a new candidate..

Among the reasons given was that Rohani had not performed up to expectation and was difficult to reach most of the time.

On this, Daud however said that it was normal for this kind of thing to happen during elections.

“This is normal in any election. Some people tend to be unhappy with the candidate and want them to be replaced but sometimes those who want new candidate do not really represent the majority,” he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on the same matter recently, Rohani also described the attempt by certain quarters to get her replaced as the norm during election time.

“I am aware that some people were trying to discredit me for reasons known to them but I am confident the BN top leadership knows what is happening on the ground and will pick candidates based on merits.

“In my case, I am leaving it to the wisdom of Chief Minister Pehin Sri (Abdul Taib Mahmud) as the state BN chairman and Prime Minister as the national chairman to make the decision,” she said.

She said as for now she would continue to serve the constituents as she is still the MP until parliament is dissolved. She also said that the speculations with regards to her candidacy will not dampen her spirit to work hard and serve her constituency as usual.

BN expected to win GE13, says think tank ASLI in analysis

The Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI), a private think tank, says the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) will win the 13th General Election (GE13) and that much of the support among rural Malays, which was absent in 2008, has returned to Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN).

In its analysis presented yesterday, ASLI said BN is expected to win 123 to 135 seats in the next elections on this basis, but could reach as high as 150 if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak can attract Indian and undecided Chinese voters as well.

“From my interpretation of the research if the swing of Malay rural voters to Umno is strong then the battle for rural Malay votes will favour BN.

"The coming election will basically be decided by rural voters in rural constituencies,” ASLI’s chief executive officer/director Tan Sri Dr Michael Yeoh Oon Khing told The Malaysian Reserve in an email interview yesterday.

“Nevertheless, what can be certain is that the two big winners in the coming elections that are expected to be on April 14 or 21, 2013, will be Umno and the Democratic Action Party (DAP).”

Dr Yeoh said trends showed Indian rural and semi-urban voters have shifted back to BN while urban voters of all races are still with the opposition.

Undecided voters would pay close attention to choice of candidates and how the campaign unfolds to make their choice.

ASLI says it is confident that Tan Sri Taib Mahmud would deliver 100% of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera seats, giving the majority to win Sarawak while it is confident that Umno should do well in Sabah, leading BN to regain control of the state government.

The analysis said the Pakatan Rakyat coalition should retain Kelantan and Penang, but BN could regain Penang if there is solid Malay backing and if the MCA and Gerakan could win just four more seats.

ASLI is neutral on Selangor, saying that the battle for that state would be the toughest. It is confident on BN winning Kedah and Perak on the back of support from the Malay swingback to Umno, adding that DAP will still hold on to its Chinese majority seats in Perak.

The report ended by presenting scenarios of post election realignment possibilities; such as Umno and Parti Islam Malaysia (PAS) or Umno and DAP.

The analysis was done based on telephone interviews and discussions with different groups as well as other surveys done by other researchers, said Dr Yeoh, adding that the demographics are broad based covering different ages and ethnic groups.

In a related news, an online media highlighted a Morgan Stanley Research report that said: “If the ruling BN loses by winning less than 50% of the seats up for grabs, investors would likely see this as a ‘negative risk event’.”

It added that BN losing would affect leadership and government stability thereby “postponing the reform agenda undertaken by the country in the near term until political stability is restored.”

KUCHING: Parti Tindakan Demokratik (DAP) akan tetap meletakkan calonnya di kerusi Parlimen Mas Gading meskipun dibantah keras oleh Naib Presiden Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) pusat, Datuk John Tenewi.

Setiausaha DAP Negeri Chong Chieng Jen berkata, kenyataan Tenewi tidak menggambarkan pandangan sebenar pemimpin akar umbi PKR di Mas Gading.

“Saya telah menghubungi pemimpin-pemimpin akar umbi PKR di Mas Gading dan jelas sekali mereka tidak sependapat dengan Tenewi. Hakikatnya, mereka memberi jaminan akan menyokong penuh calon kami (DAP), Mordi Bimol,” katanya pada sidang media di ibu pejabat parti itu di sini, semalam.

Kenyataan Chong itu jelas bertentangan dengan dakwaan Tenewi baru-baru ini apabila beliau memberitahu DAP agar menjauhi kerusi Mas Gading atau ‘langkah mayat mereka (PKR) dahulu’ jika mahu bertanding di kerusi tersebut.

Tenewi menambah, DAP seharusnya memfokus sepenuhnya kepada kerusi-kerusi (Parlimen) di kawasan bandar dan menyerahkan konsituensi majoriti Dayak kepada PKR.

Mengulas lanjut mengenai kenyataan Naib Presiden PKR pusat itu, Chong yang juga Ahli Parlimen Bandar Kuching berkata, Tenewi hanya menyuarakan pandangan peribadinya bukan usul kolektif rakyat peringkat akar umbi.

Beliau menegaskan tidak akan melepaskan Mas Gading tanpa mencuba terlebih dahulu kerana pada akhirnya, keputusan calon dari parti mana yang bertanding akan ditentukan oleh pucuk kepimpinan Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

“Sudah tentu menjadi kebiasaan untuk mana-mana parti untuk meletakkan calon masing-masing, tetapi siapa jua calonnya kami (DAP) akan memberi sokongan,” katanya.

Beliau menambah, kedua-dua parti akan cuba sedaya mungkin untuk mengelak pertarungan antara lain kerana ia hanya akan menjejaskan peluang PR menang.

Menurut Chong, PR di Sarawak seharusnya dapat mencatatkan kemenangan maksimum iaitu 12 daripada 31 kerusi parlimen yang dipertandingkan di negeri ini.

Chong tanpa menyatakan dengan lebih spesifik kerusi yang bakal diletakkan calon DAP berkata, kebanyakannya adalah konstituensi di kawasan bandar selebihnya luar bandar.

Hadir sama pada sidang media itu, Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Batu Kawah Christina Chiew, Pengerusi DAP Sri Aman, Leon Jimat Donald dan Mordi.

SIBU: Speculations on the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Saratok parliamentary seat should cease and the focus channelled towards ensuring it remains with the party.

Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) supreme council member Chambai Lindong said on Friday that in the true spirit of BN, any differences should be put aside to prevent the opposition from exploiting issues to their advantage.

“Now is not the time to speculate. Our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has been moving around to ensure everything is in place and this shows that the election is very near.

“What is of utmost importance is for all members and leaders from grassroots level upwards to work in a concerted manner, reinforced by strong support from other BN component parties to retain the BN’s stronghold this impending election,” Chambai toldthesundaypost.

He was responding to a news report which claimed members of BN component parties in Saratok wanted the ruling coalition to field more women candidates in the coming election.

It quoted Nasir Manap – Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Hossin Sulaiman and Lim Kieng Huat – SPDP, Roland Angking – Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) as well as Lau Pun Hui and Wee Lee Gua – Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) as saying they wanted a woman candidate to be fielded in Saratok.

They claimed this was in response to Najib and Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s call for a big victory for BN this election.

“That statement purportedly came from certain people, comprising certain councillors and certain individuals, and that is about all. To say that certain people would like to see a woman candidate for BN in Saratok is a valid expression of choice of preference,” said Chambai.

“There is no distinction among genders and anyone can offer himself or herself or push for his or her preference in the media.”

However, he said the statement was rather vague and should have been backed up with details from the party divisions concerned.

“I believe this is an individual’s impression rather than party’s opinions. I am not saying that they are wrong as they expressed their view on their preference.

“But at the end of the day, what counts is that whoever is being picked by the top BN leadership, the candidate will be able to win for BN. It is best to leave everything to the PM’s wisdom.”

On speculation that he was among the several names said to replace incumbent member of parliament Jelaing Mersat, who is Deputy Transport Minister, Chambai laughed.

“In all honesty, I do not know how my name came about but I guess with speculation you will always have more than one name,” he replied.

KUCHING: Rubiah Wang, who is widely tipped to be the BN candidate for Kota Samarahan in the soon-to-be-called 13th general election preferred to keep mum over her candidacy.

She said the decision was in the hands of the BN top leaders, and that things would change in the 11th hour.

“Everything (about candidacy) is still not conclusive as the final list of candidates has yet to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” she said when met at the Asajaya Sports Complex yesterday.

Talks are rife that Rubiah is the likely candidate to replace Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib, who won the seat in the 12th general election in 2008.

Rubiah, who is currently Samarahan District Officer, stressed that for now she preferred to continue serving the people as a civil servant to the best of her ability.

She denied holding any position in PBB, the backbone of the state BN coalition.

KUCHING: Several members of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in Saratok yesterday voiced out their wish for the BN to field more women candidates in the coming general election.

Nasir Manap from PBB, Hossin Sulaiman and Cr Lim Kieng Huat (SPDP), Cr Roland Angking (PRS) and Lau Pun Hui and Wee Lee Gua (SUPP) said they especially wanted a woman to be the BN candidate for Saratok to lead them for the next five years after the polls.

They said through a press statement that they were in fact responding to the call of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in wanting a big victory for the BN this election, including Saratok.

“We, representing the BN components in Saratok, agree and propose that the BN candidate for Saratok is picked from our women members.”

They also referred to articles from the Nov 1, 2012 edition of The Star and Feb 19. 2013 of The Borneo Post whereby Taib and Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukry respectively encouraged the BN to have more young and educated women to represent them in the State Legislative Assembly and in Parliament so that women would not lagg behind their male counterparts in terms of human capital and leadership development.

They said their proposal was aimed at opening opportunities for women to prove their credibility as leaders to those who were very active, educated and progressive as well as capable in bringing about more development to Saratok.

Saratok is one of the four parliamentary seats held by SPDP and its incumbent MP is SPDP senior vice-president Jelaing Mersat.

Several names have been bandied about to replace Jelaing the Deputy Minister of Transport should BN leadership decided to drop him. They included Chambai Lindong, Enturan Luta, Dr James Chela, Jasmy Sadan Sagi, Cr Barbara Mawan and Tan Sri William Mawan all from SPDP. Mawan however has downplayed the rumour of him getting into the race describing it as coffee shop talks.

In another development, an SPDP party insider said almost 250 members of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Saratok led by Ismail Hussein, left the party to join SPDP yesterday.

Last month, another 65 former PKR Saratok members, including Ismail, defected to SPDP but state PKR came out and shot down the defection by claiming that they were not PKR members because their names were not in the register.

KUCHING: Presiden Parti Demokratik Progresif Sarawak (SPDP) Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom mengesahkan ada mengemukakan beberapa nama termasuk wanita untuk bertanding atas tiket Barisan Nasional (BN) di kerusi Parlimen Saratok.

Menurutnya senarai yang dikemukakannya sejak sekian lama, mengandungi beberapa nama bagi kerusi-kerusi SPDP adalah untuk membolehkan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak membuat pilihan.

“Kita mengemukakan beberapa nama untuk meluaskan pilihan Perdana Menteri. Kita beri pilihan beberapa nama untuk membolehkan beliau membuat keputusan,” katanya selepas menghadiri sesi perjumpaan pemimpin BN Negeri dengan Najib di sini, semalam.

Mawan yang juga Menteri Pembangunan Sosial berkata beliau turut memasukkan wanita dalam pilihan untuk Saratok berpandukan permintaan pemimpin akar umbi BN di kawasan tersebut.

“Itu permintaan orang di situ, pucuk pimpinan BN mempunyai penilaian sendiri dalam menentukan siapa calon paling layak bertanding,” ujarnya.

Beliau menegaskan apa jua keputusan pucuk pimpinan BN kelak, persoalan peribadi wajar diketepikan demi memastikan kemenangan calon BN yang dipilih Perdana Menteri.

“Pada akhirnya yang penting ialah orang itu (calon) dapat bekerja untuk rakyat,” katanya.

Kelmarin, beberapa pemimpin BN dari kawasan Parlimen Saratok mencadangkan agar calon wanita dicalonkan untuk kerusi itu pada Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13 (PRU13).

Mereka dalam kenyataan akhbar berkata keputusan itu dibuat untuk membuka peluang kepada calon wanita yang lebih berpengalaman dan berkelayakan membuktikan kredibiliti mereka sebagai pemimpin terbaik.

“Demi menyahut seruan Perdana Menteri (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) dan Ketua Menteri (Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) untuk memastikan kejayaan BN di Sarawak, kami mewakili ahli BN di kawasan Parlimen Saratok telah berpakat dan sebulat suara mencadangkan agar calon yang bakal ditampilkan Perdana Menteri untuk Parlimen Saratok kali ini adalah daripada kalangan wanita.

“Merujuk kepada laporan akhbar baru-baru ini, Ketua Menteri dan Ahli Parlimen Batang Sadong Nancy Shukri amat menggalakkan penyertaan wanita yang masih muda dan berpendidikan untuk menyumbang ilmu pengetahuan mereka menerajui pucuk kepimpinan parti agar wanita tidak terus ketinggalan,” kata mereka.

Menurut mereka lagi, ketika ini rakyat amat memerlukan pemimpin yang lebih aktif, berpendidikan tinggi, berdaya maju serta mampu membawa perubahan besar kepada Parlimen Saratok seterusnya memastikan pembangunan pesat Sarawak dapat direalisasikan demi kepentingan rakyat.

Pelantikan wanita sebagai wakil rakyat pastinya memberi impak positif kepada parti dan memastikan kejayaan BN pada PRU13 akan datang, tambah kenyataan akhbar itu.

“Kami benar-benar percaya dan yakin dengan kewibawaan serta kemampuan calon wanita menerajui BN di kawasan Parlimen Saratok yang seterusnya membawa kepada kejayaan parti.

“Kami amat berharap keputusan bakal ditetapkan kekal mengambil kira kepentingan rakyat di Saratok,” ujar mereka.

Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan gave this warning at a Chinese New Year gathering for Lawas Chinese associations and guilds attended by nearly 1,000 people.

“It happened with the RM40 million Lawas-Long Sukang Road project surrendered twice by two different contractors, where thousands of people in Lawas were short of water when the treatment plant project was obstructed,” he recalled.

“This is bad politics compared to the BN’s politics of development and inclusiveness,” he added.

Awang Tengah said the opposition would be singing a tune of change in the coming election, but the public must wise up to the fact that the change should benefit them rather than bring about undesirable consequences.

The BN under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has a proven track record of delivering the goods.

“There must be experienced hands; youths and BN have this approach as reflected in the prime minister’s constant engagement with the younger generation and across the board,” he said.

Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of Industrial Development and Minister of Public Utilities, said the BN government has shielded Malaysia from the global phenomenon of rising cost of living due to geo-political changes in US, Europe and the Middle East.

“We have various kinds of aid for the people to cope with the inevitable global rise in cost of living, and the various transformation programme involving the government, economic, social and other sectors  as spearheaded by the prime minister,” he said.

Calling on the community to back incumbent Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong in the coming general elections, he said Lawas must continue to be BN’s bedrock and Sarawak, its fortress.

“The BN government has established a conducive environment for business and economic activities through affirmative policies, and we wish to see BN under the prime minister’s leadership continue to lead the way,” he added.

This calls for unity among the people to sustain the momentum of developing Lawas which still needs much infrastructure and public amenities.

Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong commended the community in Lawas, including outstanding professionals such as doctors for their emphasis on education and progress.He hoped for their continued support in the coming general election as the government has proven to be fair and inclusive in its policies.

The function kicked off with the ‘Lao Shen’ performed by dignitaries and ‘Hui Chun’ calligraphy writing by Tengah, songs and dances.

Earlier, organising chairman cum Lawas Hawkers Association chairman Siek Ngok Bing commended the Chinese community for their unity and called for their continued support.

Also present at the function were Tengah’s wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Limbang Resident Maria Hasman, Pemanca Tan Yong H’ng and other community leaders.

MUKAH: Perhimpunan mendesak supaya Ahli Parlimen Mukah Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad digantikan dengan muka baharu pada Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13 (PRU13) kelak tidak mendapat sambutan di kalangan penduduk tempatan.

Diketuai Aini Suhaili, perhimpunan yang diadakan di Balai Raya Kampung Bom, Oya, dekat sini semalam cuma dihadiri tidak lebih 20 orang, terdiri daripada penduduk kampung itu.

Mereka yang menyertai perhimpunan bermula jam 10 pagi itu turut membawa bersama kad manila tertera kata-kata seperti “Kami mahu calon baru BN di P213” dan “Beri peluang calon baru BN di P213”.

Aini, 48, yang mahu dikenali sebagai ‘pengundi BN’ berkata mereka tidak menentang BN cuma ingin melihat muka baharu di Parlimen P.213 Mukah.

“Kami berkumpul di sini bukan untuk menunjukkan bahawa kami adalah penentang BN ataupun Ketua Menteri Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud mahupun mewakili pihak perseorangan atau parti pembangkang.

“Kami berkumpul di sini hanya menzahirkan rasa kecewa dengan perkhabaran mengenai penamaan semula Dato Sri Muhammad Leo Toyad sebagai Calon BN P.213 Mukah pada PRU13 kelak,” katanya.

Justeru, beliau memberitahu mereka sebagai pengundi BN memang tidak menolak BN, PBB ataupun Ketua Menteri dan yang penting mereka tidak menolak Muhammad Leo.

“Dato Sri (Muhammad Leo) sudah 30 tahun menjadi penyandang kerusi Parlimen Mukah, jadi apa salahnya kali ini beri peluang kepada muka baharu untuk tampil mewakili kami di parlimen ini.

“Kita juga mengakui bahawa Muhammad Leo adalah antara pemimpin berpengalaman dan telah lama berkhidmat selaku Ahli Parlimen. Justeru, sudah sampai masanya untuk beliau memberi laluan kepada muka baharu calon BN pada PRU13 kelak,” katanya.

Aini menegaskan, mereka tetap menyokong BN dan kepimpinan Ketua Menteri tetapi hasrat mereka untuk melihat muka baharu harap dipertimbangkan.

“Kami akan menerima sesiapa sahaja muka baharu yang dicalonkan sebab kami ingin melihat muka baharu.

“Kami berharap, hasrat kami sebagai pengundi dapat dipertimbangkan, rakyat yang selama ini setia dan sedia mendokong serta menyokong kerajaan dan BN tetap pilihan kami,” katanya.

SEBUYAU: Timbalan Ketua Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Cawangan Sebuyau Asli Yahya kesal dengan sikap pihak tertentu yang menggunakan namanya menyokong Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim dicalonkan semula bagi mempertahankan Parlimen Batang Lupar pada Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13 (PRU13) nanti.

Beliau berkata, kenyataan sedemikian tidak pernah dikeluarkannya dan penggunaan namanya dilakukan golongan yang tidak bertanggungjawab.

“Memang terkejut saya melihat laporan akhbar tempatan yang melaporkan bahawa saya menyokong penyandang sedia ada untuk bertanding pada PRU13.

“Tindakan golongan ini menggunakan nama saya adalah untuk melobi dan kepentingan peribadi,” katanya menerusi kenyataan akhbar semalam.

Menurutnya, pihak bertanggungjawab memberi kenyataan itu sepatutnya memperbetulkan keadaan dengan segera kerana ia akan menjejaskan namanya sebagai ahli parti dan penyokong setia Barisan Nasional (BN).

Bagi Ahli Jawatankuasa PBB Cawangan Sebuyau Henry Chuban berkata, sudah tiba masanya untuk parti mengemukakan calon baharu untuk Parlimen Batang Lupar.

Tambahnya, jika penyandang sedia ada dicalonkan semula, mungkin ada di kalangan pengundi akan melakukan protes.

Beliau yang juga Ketua Ranting PBB Kampung Sungai Rama mendakwa, penyandang sedia ada untuk Parlimen Batang Lupar lebih cenderung membantu individu yang pernah menentang BN sebelum ini.

“Batang Lupar adalah kerusi kuat BN. Kita tidak mahu tindakan penyandang ini akan menyebabkan kerusi ini jatuh kepada pembangkang.

“Kita memang mahu perjuangan PBB dan BN dalam membela nasib rakyat di kawasan ini,” ujarnya.

In the Baram parliamentary constituency, Ibans are the 'kingmakers' and Anwar Ibrahim should quickly realise this, says a grassroots PKR leader.

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional may retain – by default – its hold over the Baram parliamentary constituency given the confusion over who PKR will field in the coming general election.

Given the fact that 42% of Baram’s 29,000 strong electorate are Ibans, it seems most plausible that the opposition fields an Iban, but PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, however, seems to think otherwise.

Anwar allegedly announced a candidate – Roland Engan, a lawyer – from the Kenyah tribe as a candidate for Baram and this has not gone down well with the Kapit PKR wing which has been actively supporting Iban-boy Patrick Sibat Sujang.

According to Kapit PKR deputy chairman Baginda Minda, sidelining the Ibans “will be at our own risk”.

“You can’t ignore the Iban-factor. This is because the Ibans constitute 12,000 voters or about 42% of the 29,000-strong electorate as compared with Kayans of 6,800 voters, Kenyahs 4,700 and Penans and Kelabit 1,000 voters.

“Chinese and Malay comprise 2,600 and 1,700 voters respectively. If we ignore or sideline the Ibans, it will be at our own risk,” said Baginda, who is Sujang’s chief campaigner.

He was commenting on “unsettling” reports that Anwar had allegedly announced, on Feb 11 in Beluru, that Engan would be the candidate for Baram.

“(Now) the people in Baram are not only confused, but also want answers as to why Roland (Engah) is so special that he is the first PKR candidate to be confirmed ahead of about 70 other PKR candidates throughout the country.

“Is the hasty announcement an indication of trouble within the PKR?

“Was Anwar pressured to announce it in an impromptu manner as an attempt to pre-empt the growing influence of Patrick Sibat, especially among the Iban voters? Or was it an attempt to sideline the Iban voters?” asked Baginda.

Ibans are ‘kingmakers’

Baginda said if indeed Anwar had made the announcement then it would “offend the Ibans” and would be “a fatal mistake.”

Explaining further, Baginda said that although on the surface it may appear than the Ibans are “insignificant” given that they are not directly affected by the Baram dam issue, they were nonetheless “kingmakers”.

Citing examples, Baginda said in the 1990 parliamentary election, Harrison Ngau as an independent candidate contested against Luhat Wan of BN-Sarawak National Party (SNAP) in a three-cornered fight.

But with strong support from the Iban community from Marudi, Harrison won the seat with a majority of 839 votes. Sujang was one of those campaigned for Harrison.

If Ngau had depended solely on Kayan, Kenyah and Penan voters he would have lost.

Baginda said a similar scenario had occurred in Telang Usan constituency in the 2011 state election. Here too, he said, Ibans played an important role.

He said in the 2011 state election, it was clear that the Kayan, Kenyah and Penan communities were split into two – 49% voted for a Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu-BN candidate Denis Ngau, while 51% voted for Ngau.

“The kingmakers here were some 3,000 Iban voters from Puyut and Lubok Nibong polling districts, and in the last state election, they threw their support to Dennis Ngau.

“Denis Ngau won by a majority of 845 votes,” Baginda said.

He expects a similar situation in the 13th general election.

Dam, a non-issue with Ibans

According to him whilst the proposed construction of the Baram dam might be a major issue among the Kayan, Kenyah and Penan communities, it was a non-issue with the Ibans, who were more concerned about infrastructure developments like roads and their native customary rights (NCR).

He said the 2011 state election clearly showed that although the proposed dam was likely to displace some 20,000 inhabitants from 26 Kayan, Kenyah and Penan longhouses and villagers, some 50% of the people from these three communities had not opposed the government and its plan.

Hence, keeping the Ibans happy is all the more important, said Baginda.

“For the Ibans, roads and NCR issues are most important…These are the issues that we [Sujang's group] are highlighting.

“Was Anwar misled into believing Roland [Engah] has the support of the Ibans? Personally, I believe that Roland will have an uphill task in Baram constituency.

“[Because] every time he holds a gathering, his crowd of about 300 or 400 is the same people who are members of the non-governmental organisations [NGOs].

“He [Engah] needs to have the support of the Iban voters.

“But will the Iban voters support him?” Baginda said.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah State Reform Party (STAR) leader Jeffrey Kitingan’s advice to Anwar Ibrahim is this: Go read your history on the formation of Malaysia and the agreements made.

The maverick politician said that the Pakatan Rakyat coalition leader’s statement on autonomy for Sabah was misplaced and incorrect.

“It also shows that he doesn’t know what he was talking about or deliberately ignores the agreement, the promises and the assurances made by the Founding Fathers of Malaysia,” said Jeffrey in response to Anwar’s statement on Sabah autonomy.

He contended that the issue of autonomy for Sabah and Sarawak is “not a matter of federal policy as indicated by Anwar but a special condition agreed at the time of the formation of Malaysia and is spelt out in the 20-Points, the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report as well as under Article 8 of the Malaysia Agreement”.

“What Anwar said is totally wrong with regard to Sabah and Sarawak and reflects his old Ketuanan Melayu mentality and attitude towards the East Malaysian States,’ he said.

Anwar only interested in Putrajaya

Jeffrey said the federal government and Malayan political parties cannot decide or determine autonomy for Sabah and Sarawak as this was a condition for the formation of Malaysia.

Autonomy for Sabah and Sarawak, he said, had already been determined and decided by the Malaysia Agreement, the 20-Points and the IGC Report.

“What is required is compliance and implementation. What we in Sabah want to hear from Anwar is whether under his government, he is willing to sit down and review the Malaysia Agreement and to comply with the promises and assurances agreed to prior to Sept 16, 1963, including a new constitution of Malaysia?

“If not, then Anwar is not interested in reform but only in Putrajaya,” said Jeffrey.

Reform for Sabah, including good governance, could only be beneficial for Sabah under Sabah’s own leadership who would not repeat the mistakes of the past including being fooled by Malayan political propaganda, he added.

BELAWAI: Sokongan penuh terhadap penyandang kerusi Parlimen Tanjung Manis Datuk Norah Tun Abdul Rahman sebagai calon dalam Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13 (PRU13) akan datang disuarakan oleh semua ahli Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan (PNK) Belawai baru-baru ini.

Secara keseluruhannya pihak kami amat berpuas hati atas komitmen yang ditunjukkan oleh wakil rakyat terbabit dengan segala usaha dan perancangan yang telah dilaksanakan sejak berkhidmat menerajui tampuk kepimpinan di sini, kata wakil PNK Belawai Singki Suhaili.

“Pihak kami akan berjanji terus berusaha memastikan kemenangan kekal milik Barisan Nasional (BN) di kawasan kami,” katanya.

Menurut Singki lagi, seharusnya semua warga nelayan di sini menunjukkan tanda terima kasih atas segala usaha kerajaan yang selama ini banyak memberi perubahan kepada pembangunan dengan membantu calon BN terutama kepada Norah agar beliau kekal menerajui pimpinan di kawasan Parlimen Tanjung Manis.

“Segala persoalan berkaitan calon yang akan bertanding dalam pilihan raya kali ini kita serah kepada Perdana Menteri, siapa saja calon tersebut pastinya akan memperolehi kemenangan dan kita sebagai masyarakat di sini akan turut bekerjasama memastikan kemenangan parti itu, ikrar semua ahli PNK Belawai,” katanya kepada wartawan di sini.

Dalam pada itu, Singki yang juga ahli Lembaga Pengarah Persatuan Nelayan Belawai menambah bahawa BN telah banyak membantu memperjuangkan nasib nelayan di sini menerusi pelbagai bentuk bantuan, strategi, perancangan serta pelaksanaan program pembangunan terutama dalam mempertingkatkan taraf sosioekonomi nelayan.

“Kerajaan telah banyak melaksanakan insiatif dalam usaha meningkatkan taraf kehidupan nelayan di samping penyediaan pelbagai kemudahan bagi memastikan golongan ini dapat menjalani kehidupan dengan selesa,” jelas belia lagi.

Justeru, sejak beberapa tahun lalu pelbagai insiatif demi insiatif diperkenalkan oleh kerajaan untuk melihat keadaan rakyat tidak terbeban dengan kos sara hidup yang semakin meningkat akibat keadaan krisis ekonomi dunia antaranya pemberian elaun sara hidup nelayan selain bantuan pembaikian rumah nelayan.

Justeru, Singki yang mewakili pihak PNK Belawai menyeru warga nelayan agar terus kekal padu dan memberi sokongan sepenuhnya kepada Norah pada PRU13 nanti.
