KUCHING: An epic battle is shaping up in the Selangau parliamentary constituency this general election, where SWP’s advisor and political veteran Datuk Sng Chee Hua will battle against PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun.
When announcing SWP’s candidates at the party’s headquarters here yesterday, its president and Sng’s son Larry Sng also revealed that former Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) general manager Wilfred Stephen Landong and 61-year-old lecturer Ellison Ludan would be the party’s candidates in Sri Aman and Kanowit respectively.
It had been earlier announced that that Larry himself, deputy president George Lagong and Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat would contest in Lubok Antu, Hulu Rajang and Julau respectively.
All the six seats SWP is contesting are PRS-held constituencies.
The senior Sng, when asked what had influenced him to return to active politics after an over decade-long hiatus, responded: “Joseph Entulu has invited me openly to challenge him. As a matter of fact, within this past one year I have been going to the ground to find a suitable candidate. He kept on insisting, so I do not want to disappoint him.
“At least (when I contest) he won’t be disappointed. Either he loses happily or I win happily, we don’t know, we will find out.”
To a reporter’s question on why “Entulu seems to like Sng so much”, the former Julau MP opined that it could because he (Sng) would be able to manage the constituency better than the Selangau incumbent.
The announcement was made to a packed press conference. Apart from Wong, all nominated candidates were present. Also present were SWP secretary-general Dr Ong Lark Sai, deputy publicity information chief Nancy Nais and supreme council member Jonathan Jalin.
Commenting on the party’s chances in the coming polls, Larry said based on its membership and assessment, SWP was confident to win in all the six parliamentary constituencies.
On 57-year-old Wilfred, the former assistant minister and former youth advisor clarified that Wilfred’s selection was not a last minute decision as he had constantly been working on the ground for quite some time.
“SWP assess the situation on the ground constantly and we have several candidates in mind for each constituency. He is our chosen candidate. Given that Wilfred is formerly a senior civil servant attached with SFC, he is very well versed on the issues on the ground.
“Considering that he is also a local, I believe that he will give a strong challenge to Sri Aman incumbent MP Masir Kujat,” explained Larry.
George, who is the party’s candidates selection committee chairman, said all candidates were selected based on ground assessment.
Sixty-six-year-old Sng’s last involvement in parliamentary election was in 1995 when he won in Julau under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket with a staggering 9,509 vote-majority. Sng received 10,730 votes to defeat independent candidates Edward Empra Kadom and Entalai Munan who garnered 1,221 and 391 votes respectively.
Sng also won uncontested in the 1996 state election in Pelagus before making way to his son Larry in the 2001 state polls.

Incumbent Mas Gading MP to defend seat as BN-friendly independent candidate, claims support from voters
KUCHING: Incumbent Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe, who was left out of the Barisan Nasional (BN) list of candidates, announced that he will defend his seat as a BN friendly independent candidate at a dinner hosted for his supporters at Bau Civic Centre last night.
The State BN had on Tuesday announced former Salcra deputy general manager Anthony Nogeh Gumbek from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) as its candidate to replace Dr Tiki, who had been partyless after being sacked by SPDP over a year ago for gross insubordination.
Dr Tiki, in his speech during the dinner, claimed the decision was made following calls from the people in Mas Gading for him to stand as they wanted to see the constituency remain under BN.
“The strong support that the people give me, and my great concern that Mas Gading may fall to the opposition, give me the reason to contest and there will be no turning back,” he said.
Dr Tiki served for three terms as Mas Gading MP since 1999. Despite being dropped from a deputy minister post in 2008, he was appointed as National Service Training Council chairman, a post he holds till today.
With Dr Tiki entering the fray, this predominantly Bidayuh constituency could have the most number of candidates in the general election in the state.
A former banker Boniface Willy Tumek, 55, was named as PKR candidate for the seat during a press conference at the state party headquarters here last night.
This was despite DAP already confirming aquatic science graduate Mordi Bimol, 28, as the candidate for the same seat during a press conference held earlier yesterday in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
At the packed PKR press conference, the party national operations centre director Sabaruddin Mohd Yasim announced Willy as among the final list of 14 candidates from PKR to contest in the state.
All the candidates were also issued letters of authorisation to use PKR logo when submitting their nomination forms tomorrow.
Sabaruddin, however, refused to comment on two Pakatan candidates contesting against each other for the votes in Mas Gading. “This is the final list from us, and I was given the mandate by the de-facto leader (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) to announce it here tonight”.
“There is still tonight (last night) and tomorrow (today) for negotiations to be made (to avert Pakatan contesting against one another). All these talk of multi-cornered fights are just speculations for now, just wait for the nomination day (to know what happened next),” he said.
PKR state chairman Baru Bian and Willy who were hopeful that DAP would withdraw from contesting in Mas Gading.
Baru said PKR would not give up the seat, while Willy said the bigger attendances at PKR ceramah showed that PKR had better chances than DAP in wresting the seat from BN .
STAR had announced last month that a former MP Patrick Anek Uren, who represented Mas Gading from 1974 until 1986, would be its candidate.
The stage is now set for a five-cornered fight in Mas Gading but the main battle is likely to be between Nogeh and Dr Tiki.

Tidak setuju Calon BN Sarawak

Jelaing threatens to go against Mawan

Borneo Post on April 18, 2013, Thursday
QUIITING SPDP: Jelaing (centre) and about 300 SPDP supporters make known their displeasure over the nomination of Mawan to stand in Saratok.
Jelaing Mersat
SARATOK: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) senior vice-president and Saratok MP Jelaing Mersat, who is not selected by the Barisan Nasional (BN) to defend the seat has threatened to rally party members here to go against party president Tan Sri William Mawan in the election.
Jelaing, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport, was among the 320 SPDP members who expressed their intention to quit the party with immediate effect to protest against the candidacy of Mawan in Saratok.
The apparently disgruntled members claimed they were not consulted on the change of candidate. They also claimed that the BN did not consider the views of grassroots leaders.
“The action (of the BN and SPDP) is a reflection of their disrespect to the wish of the people,” Jelaing said when met at Rumah Dayak in Saratok yesterday.
He also claimed that grassroots leaders were once united to defend SPDP but not this time as they were disillusioned by the latest political development.
“I feel betrayed. I would accept the BN decision if I were told about the change of candidate a long time ago especially if I were entrusted to groom a new candidate.”
“However, every time I asked the party president (Mawan) if I will be re-nominated, he replied in the affirmative saying my name was the only one submitted (to the BN).
“Then when the Chief Minister announced the candidate list, I was shocked to hear the party president being nominated to replace me,” he said.
He claimed some grassroots leaders were unhappy with the BN decision to replace him with Mawan.
Jelaing warned that if BN went ahead and nominate Mawan his group would not support the party president.
“This is our opinion and the top BN leadership must listen to us to ensure that BN retains the seat,” an irate Jelaing said.
When asked if he would stand as an independent, Jelaing said he certainly would if the grassroots supporters wanted him to.
Meanwhile, SPDP lawyer Chambai Lindong in his facebook posted yesterday listed the four resolutions passed by PSDP Bahagian Krian and Kalaka divisions which included disagreement with the candidacy of William Mawan in Saratok, request for proper and full consultations with the two divisions should Jelaing be replaced and en mass resignation of members of these two divisions.
The last resolution was to set up a special committee comprising Jelaing and four others to formulate further course of actions.

Najib: 80 per cent new faces in BN line-up for Selangor

Borneo Post on April 17, 2013, Wednesday
SHAH ALAM: The Barisan Nasional (BN) is to field 80 per cent new faces, among them professionals and credible individuals, in Selangor in the 13th General Election, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said yesterday.
Najib, who is Selangor BN chairman, said this was in keeping with the wishes and expectations of the people in the state, and the BN submitted to the wishes and power of the people.

The candidates were the best transformational line-up to recapture Selangor from the opposition and establish a strong state government, he said before announcing the 22 candidates for parliamentary seats and 56 for state seats in the state, at an event at the Selangor Umno building here.
The BN candidates for Selangor comprise professionals such as lawyers, engineers, accountants and businessmen.
Najib also pledged to fulfil the Selangor BN’s pledges and said the new state government would be unlike the present opposition state government which only made empty promises.
Najib said the BN candidates were selected after taking into account their popularity at the grassroots, people-friendly demeanour and preparedness to provide dedicated service to the people.
“As such, I expect our candidates to convince the voters that they can bring success to the BN. This is the line-up which will redeem our defeat (in the last general election) and return the BN as the government in
Selangor.
“I apologise if, in the selection of these candidates, my colleagues and I were unable to satisfy the hopes of all quarters because it is impossible to do so,” he
said.
He said it was more important for the party to be victorious and they gave the party hope to champion the party members and the people.
Najib said that as the Selangor BN chairman, he would continue to monitor the running of the state government if the BN recaptured the state and would ensure that the state underwent a transformation and more intensive development.
“We will rectify any shortcomings to the best of our ability,” he said.
In this general election, Umno is fielding nine candidates in parliamentary seats and 35 in state seats in Selangor, the MCA is fielding seven candidates in parliamentary seats and 14 in state seats, the MIC is fielding four candidates in parliamentary seats and three in state seats.
Gerakan is fielding one candidate in a parliamentary seat and three candidates in state seats, the PPP is fielding one candidate in a state seat while former Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP and Perkasa vice-president Datuk Zulkifli Noordin is being fielded in the Shah parliamentary
seat.
At the event, Najib expressed his appreciation and thanks to the people for their rising support and hoped that Allah (God) would bless the BN with a victory in Selangor.
